Reviews for Gazette

Been here several weeks ago in the middle of the week. This frenchi is really lovely, great food and lovely settings. Would certainly come again.

One of the best French bistros in England. It is typic and cheap for what you get. All dishes are LARGE so be careful how much you order.
Excellent wines from he ordinary list at reasonable prices for London.
Good service with a smile.
It is in the borough of Wandsworth NOT Balham.

I have visited this restaurant several times and have always been impressed. The last time I went was for Valentines day, for £35 a head we had a four course meal with a champagne cocktail and a rose for my girlfriend. This was extremely good value for money and the food was delicious- a starter of lobster raviolli followed by baked cheese, a main course of lamb or sea bass and then an assiette of desserts. The service was good, despite the restaurant being full, and the ambience was lovely. One thing that appealed is the way the food and drink is served- a measuring jug was used for the water whilst cooking pans were used to serve the food in. This added a unique appeal to the eating experieince. I will definately be returning soon.

verry good food, pleasant atmosphere, good service, logic prices

No don't worry - i am not going to slate the place, i was quite content with this restaurant on the whole and would certainly reccommend it. The restaurant was cute but spacious in a rustic way, the staff were loveably French and there were nice touches such as the menu which in a "la gazette" style and the charming accordian music playing in the background.

I came here with a friend who is very hard to please, so probably not a great idea to bring him here for my very first time. However, he did like the look and feel of the restaurant of it and certainly was complimentary with the mussels that we shared for starters- juicy, flavoursome and fresh. For mains we decided to go with seafood and this is where it all went downhill for him. I was quite happy with my cod but i must admit that the scallops and cauliflower puree sounded better on paper. It was served in a small le creuset dish so it was hard to eat and which also meant the scallops drowned in the puree, killing absolutely any flavour. He hated it and left it half finished with a scowl. To add insult to injury the next tables' cote de beouf arrived - a dish that we we considered at first but decided against. It looked glorious and bloody - and enough to feed about four although it was for two. He could not keep his eyes off of it!

We finished with desserts, he had the chocolate souffle and i had the creme brulee. Both large and wonderful that it nearly cheered him up. The bill came up to £60 with the trusted places card. Unfortunately they only gave one main dish for free and did not do the offer on the other plates. Quel domage we didn't choose the beef!

Nestled next to the Thames, Gazette offers something for everyone day or night. During the day you can settle in with a paper, fresh coffee, croissants and jam for breakfast, while for lunch you could be tempted by a selection of fresh sandwiches, crepes, salads and soups. Finally for dinner you can choose from main menu which consists of 8 daily specials (4 starters and 4 mains) plus an array of French classics such as moule marinere, prime steak, french onion soup.... the works. I also must not forget to mention the wine list... Truly a bible.

The atmosphere was charming; attention staff, welcoming surroundings, subtle lighting and great furniture.... our table was a sheet of glass resting on a raburn oven!

The food was delicious. Simple, proper, classic, simply scrummy French nosh. To kick off the baked scallops were plump and succulent, the moule were vast as well as immersed in sumptuous liquor, the rabbit terrine was hearty and textured. As we were feeling peckish we also gobbled down a platter of cold meats... peppery, chewy, smokey.. ummm.. yum.

For main, the only minor disappointment was the baked cod. Somewhat uninspiring compared to the rest. I had a stunning venison fillet in a red wine and juniper berry sauce. Browny and Dad demolished a wonderful rare slab of steak, while Mum opted for the delicate and tender pigeon. The strong and solid flavours were perfect to welcome in the Autumn/winter season.

We were sorely tempted by the puds, but somehow managed to resist.. Gazette is famous for its creme brulee!

All in all I would highly recommend this great place. Its seems to provide the perfect balance; informality, style, cheerful staff, genuine and delicious food all at a reasonable price... especially when using the ToL card!
