Reviews for Covent Garden Grill
We found the Covent Garden Grill quite by chance - during the week before Christmas we found ourselves having forgotten to book, and were struggling to find anywhere to eat.
The staff seated us quickly in a booth and once we'd asked them to turn down the overly loud Mariah Carey (which apparently had been insisted upon by the office parties downstairs) we settled in well. Aspects of the interior recall some of the grill bars in Lower Manhattan, which is likely the intention.
I opted for the pork loin with braised cabbage and garlic mash, while my companion had the steak burger. Both were above average examples of the genre - with the pork loin a particular treat. Portion size was well above average as well.
The wine list looked quite acceptable, but in the end we opted for beer and diet coke respectively. Decent rage of bottled beers, including some real ales which are being marketed at the premium lager market (eg Fuller's Honeydew).
Will definitely return to sample the wine list, but I think I'll choose a day when I haven't had a huge breakfast, so I can do the portions justice.
Being on a strict eating plan from my personal trainer, or indeed the same for followers of the Atkins diet, I find it hard to find a restuarant that will give you a choice of either salad, mixed veg, chips or baked potato with your char grilled steak.
For mains I ordered the 10oz rib eye steak with a red wine & shallot sauce. Steak in this restuarant is sourced from the Scottish Borders & hung for 28 days. My friend chose the Char-grilled salmon which he raved about.
For dessert I had the cherry brandy mousse in a dark chocolate casing, it was rather rich but I was advised that it was a particularly rich chocolately dessert prior to ordering. My friend had the homemade white choclate icecream with Ammeretto which was nothing to write home about.
The staff are very helpful and the decor is simple yet pleasing on the eye.
They do have a pre-theatre menu but this must be ordered prior to 5.30pm which is a little too early cut off for most pre-theatre meals I suspect.
Covent Garden Grill is certainly fashionable, yet the atmosphere is entirely without pretension and it is this which gives the place its unique character. So whether you´re shopping, sightseeing, theatre-going or just simply in need of a little refreshment, this independently run restaurant in Covent Garden really is the perfect find.
Hip and modern but without pretensions, Covent Garden Grill is a terrific modern grill with an international menu right where you want it, in the midst of giddy Covent Garden.
The cool interior is done in shades of taupe and mocha, with swooshy big artworks and smart detailing. The bar and ground floor dining attract a pleasant hubbub, while the downstairs restaurant, equally groovy, is more exclusive in feel.
