Reviews for Il Baretto
This places seems to have changed hands a few times, but this time it should last - excellent classic italian food. Prices, but would recommend for a nice night out.
Confusingly the name has changed again. It is now Il Baretto and has a swanky wine bar upstairs. Downstairs
is the Italian restaurant unchanged. Still a cavernous space, the opposite of cosy. I enjoyed the food
(venison pasta, courgettes). Service friendly if a bit chaotic. And fairly priced by Marylebone standards.
Much better than the local chains (like the dreadful Strada).
I have not had a better pizza in London (and most pizza in Italy is not this good). Proper wood-burning oven, the man working it knows what he is doing, and they have some delicious regional specialties you v. rarely see - like the Attunale (with lardo & potato slices). It's not cheap - expect to pay £35/head for pizza, a delicious salad, and half-bottle of good wine - but for the quality of the food in this part of town, it is good value.
Giusto has recently opened in this quiet spot on Blandford Street. A review in the window caught my eye, claiming the best pizza in london or something along those lines.
Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, I am going back.
The setting is simple with modern rustic touch (if that makes any sense at all) and the staff were charmingly friendly/ amusing. Just my cup of tea.
I ate a very tasty mushroom pasta, in fact come to think of it maybe the best one I have ever had (that I would happily eat many times over) and the person I was dining with had a terrific looking risotto.
It wasn't cheap and the service was more charming than electric but it was a breath of fresh air with simple dishes that oozed care, attention and excellent ingredients.
I am already looking forward to my next visit and will definitely have to try the wood-fired pizza.

In previous incarnations, the service was lamentably slow. Given Hugo's great experience, I will give it another try.
The first time I was a little misty eyed and perhaps numbed by the tastyness of my mushroom pasta and the pangs of jealously for my dining partners mushroom risotto.
To manage your expectations, the main dining area is in a basement, so I guess in the cold light of day, not that glamarous. I still think this is a place to watch though. The waiter is charming and is all excited about the plans for a sandwich bar on the ground floor.
The coffee was delicious...he said trying to make amends...
I will still go back for a decider...
