Reviews for Thai Cottage

Ok, its not much to look at on first impressions, what with those those food picture place mats on tables and a real hotpotch of chairs and tables. However if you're wanting authentic Thai decor then from what I remember of Thailand then its pretty damn good.

A really extensive menu made it almost difficult to choose from - never have I seen so many different options in a London Thai restaurant - all very keenly priced.

To start we had the chicken satay, the dumplings and some vegetable tempura. All of which were spot on. For mains we had the mandatory chicken green curry (not bad, but not out of this world), a whole chicken in chilli plum sauce (mmm, yum), a bean curd in red chilli paste (surprisingly, this got a big thumbs up from me - normally I can't abide tofu/bean curd) and a whole sea bream, plus sticky and coconut rice. For 4 people including 2 bottles of house wine and service it came to £72.

Another thing - we asked for some tap water. Whilst this results in grunts and grumbles in many a resturant, they couldn't be more obliging and topped up our glasses on regular intervals without even being asked.

We went on a Tuesday night and whilst it wasn't rammed it was far from being empty. I'd like to think it does a good trade at the weekends.

You can get Thai food of a similar standard in sleeker surroundings with mood lighting and pale wood benches around the corner on Wardour Street, but what this place has going for it is charm, authenticity, and above, some of the dearest waiting staff in the area.

Give Thai Square a miss for once and try this place.
