Reviews for Amaranth Cafe & Noodle Bar
The food wasn't terrible but I'd heard great things about this place (from reviews and friends) and it didn't live up to it. We actually got a take away but quite a lot of reviews say these are as good as the restaurant. My best mate is Thai and was visiting so I took her there as we were too early for the restaurant. She had seafood noodle soup - the stock tasted like a chicken stock cube! I had green curry with prawn - it was ok but quite bland (spicy enough but just a bit watery) prawns a bit tasteless and no basil or Thai aubergine. My friend said the rice wasn't Thai. The mixed starter was good - esp the lemongrass chicken which was really tasty. Maybe I'm being a bit over picky (esp cos my mate is Thai so can point out what's wrong!) but there are plenty of Thai places in the same price range with a bit more flavour so I don't know why people rave about it so much being authentic. It would be interesting to see if the restaurant was any better but I'm not so tempted to try now! Service was friendly and good value for money.
The food here is great - but it is, understandably, always busy and booking is essential. If you can't get in, or you just want something quick to eat, you can eat in at the takeaway/noodle bar next door - the food comes from the same kitchen with generous bowls of soup and noodle dishes - same quality, but the presentation is rather more basic than in the restaurant... across the street and under the railway bridge is Amaranth's supermarket/deli where you can buy all the ingredients to make the dishes yourself, or buy the ready-prepared dishes to heat up at home.
This is one of the best Thai restaurants in London, with an excellent choice. Well worth a visit, but you will most likely need to book. It's a BYO, but there are plenty of places in Earlsfield to buy something. The restaurant also runs a nearby deli selling homemade Thai specialities and sauces if you want to stock up your fridge.
