Now I had lived in WH for 2 years before I finally booked into Walnut. I don't know to this day why, there was just something about the outside that turned me off.

However having finally walked through the door on my way home one evening to book a Saturday night table, I completely changed my mind and my view of this restaurant.

From the second we walked through the door to the end of the meal we had a thoroughly enjoyable time. From the friendly and knowledgeable staff; the menu with its mix of staples and intruiging specials (I had Ox Cheeks for main) and the rather lovely wine menu, this place was just great.

If I was pushed, I would say the two downsides are the rather tight sittings (meaning we ate late as we couldn't get a table for the preferred 8.30 time), and (now this is picky and very personal) the fact that they don't serve espresso, only filter coffee.

Go there and support them, we certainly will be again

Excellent Modern European Cuisine served in a stylish but relaxed interior by outstandingly knowledgeable staff, makes Walnut one of Londons gems.

Fed up of cooking in other peoples kitchens, Chef Aidan Doyle and his wife, Jo, opened their own restaurant in West End lane.  It is stylish-looking, with intriguing but comfortable leather chairs, a well-designed seating plan and an effective smoke-free area. The open-plan kitchen is on a mezzanine level, so you can watch Mr Doyle at work.

Walnut has cracked this difficult corner site in West Hampstead, and in so doing, has finally given the area somewhere of gastronomic merit.
