Reviews for Mestizo

I came back from a lovely holiday in Mexico a few weeks ago totally in love with the mexican food. I thought I would never find in london a real mexican place as opposed to the tex-mex. Then I found Mestizo, what a discovery! You can have posole and mole and all that heavenly stuff. I truly recommend to start with a frozen margarita and perhaps choose a tequila to finish from an endless list.
Enjoy!

Mestizo is a good place to go any time of the year if you're looking for authentic Maxican cooking and and an enormous range of excellent tequilas. However it may be worth saving up your first visit for one of their special occasions. During September they often have a week of menus from different parts of Mexico, where you can sample a huge range of dished you won't find anywhere else in London, or possibly in Europe, and be sent on your way with a gift of mole sauce or a jar of chilis. For The Day of The Dead (November 1st) the restaurant is decorated in suitably ghoulish style, complete with an alter where you can leave offerings for your dear departed gran/Uncle Bob/tabby cat.

However if you do book for November 1st, make sure you get a table upstairs. I made the mistake of booking a party a couple of years ago and got a table in the basement with bright lights and no party vibe. The ground floor is much more atmospheric, so much so that you can quite forget you're on the Euston road with buses and ambulances whizzing past outside!

You can choose from two different menus, one for the starters and main courses and one for antojitos and tacos. As a greedy person I find their tacos a bit small, so I go for the main courses. The mole poblano hits the spot every time. Do start with a tequila cocktail (the bartender I think knows every combination) and the house red is good value if there's a crowd of you. However you may need to be patient with the staff, who usually seem to be relatives of the manager and newly arrived in England. Speaking Spanish helps if you want to order quickly.

Finally, if you're coming up from Warren Street and you think there can't possibly be a restaurant on this stretch of Euston Road, just keep walking and you'll find it (left hand side).

Oh, sounds fantastic. If I hadn't plans for Saturday already, I would definitely go!

Being Mexican, I might be biased towards my country's delicious food... This is NOT your usual overpriced-taco Tex-Mex restaurant (ahem Crazy Homies). It has some of the best and most authentic Mexican food I have ever tried outside of Mexico.
For Mexican Independence week (Sept 15) they had a special menu with some of the most exquisite plates... think 24hr slow roasted lamb.
That and amazing tequila and margarita selection make this one of my favorite places in London. They also have a "club" downstairs that plays Latin Pop and seems to have quite a following on Thursdays.

I woke up this morning wishing that I could remember more of last night. All I knew for certain was that drinking frozen lemon margaritas was like drinking paradise.

Confirmation of events came in the form of an Instant Message, from Hatti, at 10am: "Do you have a hangover? I tried cyclying back to Clapham but kept finding myself in Camden! Jesus!" There must have been some magic ingredient in that chocolate chicken. Magic is good word to summarise Mestizo, for all it's attributes are unexpected for such an off the beaten track area. Authentic Mexican food that drove Hatti to subconciously impersonate a gluttonous Mexican mama and a dashing drinks menu, dressed to kill. Head downstairs if you are a female and want to be twirled senseless by lots of Latino men! Try the tacos for £1 each and don't forget your balls and some taxi money.
