Reviews for Hop & Spice
I've just had my birthday at Hop & Spice, and I felt I had to comment on what an awesome place this is.
We were so well looked after. We had their set menu (£19 each) - which for 20 of us was perfect. They went to the trouble of printing my name on all the menus , and we were greeted with a glass of chilled champage each. You can see where this is going ...
The food started to arrive - mixed starters included their crispy lamb & potato cakes. If you have one thing at Hop & Spice - have these! A taste sensation. 6 amazing curries followed plus their house special - kottu rotti (shredded bread, egg, veg, chilli and lots of other lovely stuff - all in one bowl). Dessert included a delicious sticky chocolate brownie with thick cream & cinnamon.
To wash down this culinary delight. Well, it's not your B'day every day so we worked our way through the beer list. Very drinkable Sri Lankan brew (Lion) to start - the rest is a blur but included Innis & Gun (brewed in whiskey barrels), Old Speckled Hen, and Leffe Blonde. Where else in London can you do that over a delicious curry??
The Hop & Spice staff were fantastic, super efficient and polite - and they even sang me Happy Birthday when my cake came out. Thank you Hop & Spice - we'll be back!
Wish I could agree with the hot reviews. A bitterly disappointing experience. Portions small and expensive for what hey were, food very dull and unimaginative. In their favour, they did offer to take a dish off the bill. There is so much better in this area that has amazing food from the sub-continent. Sorry.
hop and spice was a good place for a business meeting - to impress without being over the top. The bread, delicious butter, olives and almonds were a nice touch as I was starving but the curry and lamb was quite a small portion and the lamb a bit tough unfortunately. The service was top-notch and having just returned from a holiday in France I found it less surprising than my guest that we were chatting in French at one point to the waiter!
I have been here twice so far - once with my boyfriend and once with mates. The first time we went the waiter was so helpful and really explained the menu, not that it's complicated, but he gave such good suggestions.
The food is delicious and well priced. There is always a nice atmosphere even if it's a quiet Thursday night or a busy Saturday night.
I would recommend anyone living in Balham/Clapham to make this a regular!
This is a great place for a night out. I enjoyed a dish known as a thali which basically means you get to sample a small portion of lots of different curries - a taste senation which is apparently a traditional way of serving Sri Lankan food. There was a great range for non- meat eaters which was a pleasant surprise. My partner also had something called a Kottu Rotti which he loved. There is a great atmosphere as well, the staff are really attentive and if you like chill out music it will be right up your street.
Our eye was caught by the old Bollywood film being projected onto the walls.
This place worked really well for the two of us. We were so impressed that I'm going to celebrate my 30th here with a group of friends.
