Dollar Grills & Martinis

Reviews for Dollar Grills & Martinis
Dollar dinning is a favorite pastime of mine. I always have a great time the staff are friendly and helpful.
The place has got so much appeal the main attraction for me has to be the steaks, arguably the best in London at a steal of a price. I love my steak with a terrific bottle of red, they always look after their wine list and I never get bored of the ever changing eclectic choice. They’ve got a gambling theme going but it a win, win situation ever time.
Really nice place, really nice drinks, good vibe, funky downstairs.
Unfortunately self-important staff, weak customer experience.
I went here early on a Saturday evening for a special occasion meal and I was overwhelmed. First, it's beautiful inside. The upstairs has gorgeous lighting and the seats were super comfy. The downstairs is very plush and would be a great spot for a cocktail on a date. It has little alcoves that offer the right amount of intimacy for a public place. ;o)
But it wasn't the decor the sold me, it was the cocktails - A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I had the pleasure of enjoying (among others) the Porn Star Martini and to this day have not found a drink I enjoyed more than this one. I take great pleasure in telling people that this is my favourite drink!
We also had food and although at the time I thoroughly enjoyed my fish soup thingy, it was only good enough to be remembered as a fish soup thingy. The cocktails simply stole the show.
I would definitely go here again and have but only for drinks. I'll have to try the burgers next time!
Sometimes you can be tempted by some unsofisticated meal. And for me a burger is part of that kind of league. The no brainer choice. Two piece of bread, a juicy steak in the middle, and fries to get along. When we stepped in this restaurant we were not expecting what we found on the menu. A great diversity of burgers with some interesting twists. Overall this was a great surprise. The deco is nice with the neon signs and the stone walls, and there is a lounge like-bar downstairs. A bit boho, but that is to be expected from a restaurant that serves above-£10 burgers, otherwise go to McDonald's.
Firstly, my girlfriend ordered the mussels starter, of which at least half the mussels had not fully opened. She mentioned this to the head waiter who said that she was wrong and that in fact the mussels were fine as they were open a few millimetres (literally) and that this was normal for well cooked mussels. Aside from the fact that upon trying again to open one of these mussels the shell broke and she sprayed sauce over herself, she is also from a fishing village in Spain and spent her life growing up eating shellfish and knows what well-cooked mussels should look like (not uncooked or dead like these!). They are meant to lie open in the bowl and be easily opened by hand, not need to be forced open using your fork/spoon, and not so unwilling to open that the shell should break. These mussels should not have been served by a reputable restaurant. However when the head waiter tells you that you are wrong there is not much you feel that you can do. Then, as our mains, we had the Argentinian mignon steak (from the Specials) and the monkfish. I asked for my steak medium-rare, and while I accept that it was a very good piece of meat it was barely pink in the very middle, was quite charred on the outside, and must have been approaching well done. My girlfriend's monkfish was similarly quite chewy, as were the prawns that came with it (gave the impression of being frozen and re-cooked), and my chips were so crisp they were practically crisps and I couldn't get my fork into most of them. We didn't bother with desserts after this, and didn't bother mentioning these problems to the head waiter either as he would probably have tried to persuade us that it was all in our heads once again. This is all a bit of a shame really as we have eaten at this restaurant on many occasions over the last couple of years and all our previous meals have been excellent, and we have never had any problem with the service, that is why we have come back so often. I am not sure whether they had a new chef in but when you bear in mind the prices that they are charging are comparable with places like the Top Floor at Smith's for meat dishes, most people could have made a similar effort for themselves at home. Also, there really wasn't any excuse for the attitude of the head waiter who wasn't just rude, but clearly didn't know what he was on about either.
The beautiful downstairs bar servs up a wide array of exotic & original mixed drinks. Drink's aren't exactly cheap, but they're of the highest quality and definitely worth the money. Dinner upstairs wasn't as exciting as I might have expected after drinks downstairs. The food was good, but I wasn't exactly blown away.
Really nice place to eat. Food is good and reasonably priced for the area its in. The whole place has a party type mood about it. I would recommend it for your clerkenwell drinking nights.
I headed to Dollar Grills & Martinis one day to meet fellow TrustedPlaces member Kellytron for lunch. It was a Monday, so I wasn't surprised that the restaurant wasn't very busy, though there was one large table of workmates drowning their Monday-blues.
I love the look of this place - very cool. Had a sticky-beak downstairs at the bar and it looks great too, definitely somewhere to return one evening to see how their martini's stack up.
So, back to lunch. Kellytron started with the Potato pancake with smoked salmon, which was beautifully presented and tasty. For main course she had the Scallops, which again tasted great and looked good. I decided to go for one of the house specialities - the burgers. So I attempted (and failed!) to polish off a huge burger which had a big steak patty, bacon, avocado, cashew cream, and salad, and a side of fries.
I have to agree with Walid (the previous reviewer) that the burger was pretty good, though didn't quite steal the crown for best burger in town.
This is a really cool place at the entrance of Exmouth Market. The upstairs part is a restaurant and the downstairs a kind of lounge / bar cocktail section. The bar section is dark with some red lighting that softly lights up the brick work creating this intimate atmosphere. The night we where there they were playing an old black & white Woody Allen movie, without sound, that simply added to the overall coolness feel to the place.
My friends had Martinis which simply looked and tasted great, whilst I had a Mojito that was quite good.
As for the restaurant, well there is quite a large choices of things to try out from grilled meats, fish and salads. I had a burger . The meat was of a high quality, the right texture, and was perfectly cooked. I just love those first bites in a great burger when the juices of grilled meat come into your mouth, the lovely texture, and of course the great rewarding flavors. Dollar Grills was spot on and nearly stole the crown for my favourite place to get my burgers.

I've returned to this place tonight (21/08/07) and I have to say I was quite disappointed. The food took nearly 40 minutes to arrive, the service wasn't very good, and I'm pretty sure that the burgers weren't as good as last few times. In matter of fact the last few times I've been increasingly disappointed with this place. So I've removed one star.
From the makers of Beach Blanket Babylon, comes the amazing Las Vegas style bar and restaurant in Exmouth Market. A fantastic, luxurious and glamorous Amercican restaurant, whose delicious food tastes as gorgeous as this place looks. French brasserie style mirrors maximise space and give this extravagant restaurant a touch of pure elegance. Downstairs, vaulted cellar nooks warmed by red lighting and lined with comfy leather banquettes make for one special bar. The menu has everything you might need to satisfy most tastes – burgers, pastas, steaks and grills of lamb and fish. Chef´s Speciality Dish; The grilled tiger prawn starter with white bean and rocket salad.
