Reviews for Lanes Restaurant & Bar - CLOSED
Lanes Restaurant & Bar is in a good location less than 2 minutes walk from Liverpool Street station. Located below street level, it has a bar and compact restaurant, plus a private dining area. The restaurant was pleasingly full on a Monday night when we dined there with my niece & her boyfriend, and the atmosphere was smart but relaxed. Service was particularly efficient and just friendly enough.
To start we had the Cornish Crab Ravioli with Taragon, the Baked Scallops with Pancetta, and the Marinated Pork with Pear, Blue Cheese & Pine Nuts. None were outstanding and the ravioli was over-cooked.
Main courses were the Roast Rump of Lamb, Creamy Potatoes & Haricots Verts, the Fillet of Plaice, Lemon & Dill Risotto, and the Breast of Barbary Duck, Pak Choi & Roasted Figs. The fish apparently reminded my niece of Rollmops, which I don't think was supposed to be a compliment. Desserts had to be sampled - we tried the Crme Brulee with Caramelised Banana & Passion Fruit Sauce, and the Lemon Sorbet.
Unfortunately the food just didn't quite do it for us. It looked fabulous but didn't taste as good as it looked. And it was overpriced....thankfully we were dining there on a special offer of 50% off the food cost ; )
Holding two AA Rosettes and voted by Harden´s readers and Rémy Martin as 'Best New London Restaurant - 2005', Lanes provides a perfect solution for your City dining requirements. Co-Owners are James Robertson and Hamish Smith who met while working for Marco Pierre White in 1999. Individually they went on to manage many of Marco´s restaurants including Drones, Whites, Quo Vadis & Maison Novelli. Anna Dahloff has taken the lead in the kitchen after spending three productive years working her way through the ranks. Anna´s poise and understanding of the Lanes customers´ requirements mixed with an outstanding awareness of textures and flavours has helped her create an elegant and vibrant menu. Lanes is set in the heart of the Square Mile by Bishopsgate - the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner during the week and dinner only on Saturday. What the critics say: 'Top-notch food served in an unpretentious atmosphere that´s unusual in the City' has made this late-2003 newcomer an immediate hit; service - from the 'young and talented (ex-MPW) proprietors - is 'delightful' too.' Fay Maschler, Evening Standard: 'Lanes exemplifies a new direction in the City - much better than a wine bar, less pretentious than a fine-dining restaurant.' 'Once inside there is plentiful natural light from the high windows and a stripped-down, honest, tongue-and-groove type of decor. The chef, has put together a modern European menu with enough interesting twists to make it really appealing. This is a hardworking kitchen and everything is put together with care.' 'The restaurant has much to celebrate: a highly skilled chef and his lovingly crafted dishes, a reassuringly short menu, promising freshness of ingredients, the absence - despite the restaurant´s City location - of corporate blandness, and seamlessly efficient service from charismatic staff who appear to be having fun. We suggest that you head straight to the bar, order the Alain Thienot house champagne, and drink to the fabulousness of the meal you´re about to enjoy.' Chef´s Speciality Dish: Fillet of Plaice, Lemon & Dill Risotto, Served with Fish Cream
