Reviews for Aquum
dont know how they do it! aged ribeye with aspargus, fat chips and bernaise for £9.50! about time clapham had a decent bar to eat in! great work aquum.
Clapham has many places offering food but not a lot of great places to eat. Bank Holiday Monday and we thought we'd mosey on down to the Royal Oak for a beer and a burger to find it was firmly shut. With a notice saying 'Staff Wanted' taped to the door. No shit Sherlock.
So we were heading for Eco as we've had more good pizza there than bad, only not lately. As we sauntered up Clapham Road we were bowled over by the glittery open front of a new place called Aquum. Awful name but really groovy - floaty fabric lines the walls with a slow drift of coloured lights behind softens the walls. The ceiling is cut in half by row upon row of dangling glass beads sparkling in the recessed halogen lights. Big white leather sofas line the walls and a row of high tables and padded stools run down the middle. Gorgeous mirrors line the walls. And the toilet doors are padded, quilted gold leather. There is just no walking past!
It was lunch time and the menu, though firmly in the brunch camp with a great selection of everything from smoked salmon to the full english also offers burgers and one or two other mains. I went for burger with bacon and cheese and was served a giant plate with a nicely crusted burger topped with charred smoky bacon, lovley melted cheese, a watercress salad lightly dressed and a jenga mountain of seriously good chips. It was all hot fresh and tasty.
All the while feeling like you're sat in the middle of a fairy tale.
It probably comes into its own at night when it is essentially a club, but for those of us who go to bed early there's other reasons to be grateful for this bit of style on the street.
I can feel a brunch coming on.
