Shish Old Street is a busy open plan brasserie style restaurant with its sweep of tables the perfect setting to watch the world go by. Seating is informal and relaxed making it the ideal destination for a quick, delicious, healthy meal at any time of the day. Their trademark style dining bar slithers throughout the floor space allowing you to watch the chefs create your meal on the grills. The restaurant recommend you order your Mezze, accompanied with a fresh bread selection and a drink of your choice, which will be served immediately. Whilst you are enjoying that you can then deliberate over which Shish dishes you wish to order.
I've heard mixed reviews about Shish but I for one like it. Last night my boyfriend and I, straight from work needed to eat before heading over the road to a night in Cargo.
Shish worked perfectly for us. Friendly, attentive and quick to respond staff - you cant ask for more on that front.
There was a mixed crowd from after work groups, to Valentine diners, students and families. You can sit at a bar stool and watch the chefs at work while you eat or you can eat at a table - choice is yours. It has an informality of fast food chain without the 'mucky' feel. It was clean, bright and welcoming.
Although they claim to be authentic, I think this is as feasibly close as they could get it in a restaurant of such a quick turn over and size.
We shared houmus drizzled with lemon juice and paprika with 2 warm fresh pittas, then a potion of the duck rolls and vegetable samosas which were sadly quite small and a bit bland.
For mains my partner had the Afghan Chicken wrap - Chicken marinaded in yoghurt, garlic, lemon and spices. Wrapped in a pitta with courgette tzatziki and fresh salad leaves and a bowl of pickled veg (white cabbage and carrots). I had the Teryaki Salmon kebab on a bed of white and brown rice with mixed pumpkin, sesame seeds and caramelised onions which I really enjoyed, it was filling without being heavy or greasy. The salmon was melt in the mouth and perfectly seasoned as to not over power the natural flavours.
I liked the choice of being able to select what your main is served with (rice, cous cous, chips or salad).
Although, we weren't drinking alcohol ourselves they had an alright mix of beers and wines available.
So with a couple of soft drinks and service, we paid about £35 and left feeling happily satisfied. Made a nice change from the normal quick offerings round town!
If I lived locally I would definitely use the take away service on offer also.
sorry, but this is the most unauthentic middle eastern food you can get. I was there with another friend who knows middle eastern food very well. we both agreed that the people who were making the food, probably never tasted the real thing. the food was bland. Never again.
This restaurant has its origins in the silk road & offers delicious tasting dishes at reasonable cost. The menu is a mixture of hot & cold mezze followed by mains of various kebab skewered meats and chicken cooked on the grill in front of you. The accompaniments are rice, cous cous, chips & salad.
The food is all cooked in front of you and they offer mineral water still and sparkling on tap. We often share a couple of starters then have a main meal and roll out the door. This food is both healthy & filling. My favourite mezze is lebanese aubergine salad, a portion is big enough to share follow this with a meditarranean lamb shish & I'm a happy camper.
During the week they offer specials which are excellent value. Their menu specials also changes for holidays such as celebration of chinese new year or Christmas.
Downstairs in the old street branch is a funky cocktail bar be aware if you place your order at your table not the bar you will be charged 12.5% service.
Warning to nut allergy sufferers - Please check the menu carefully as some dishes contain nuts also inform your waiter of any allergy as they do take precautionary measures. Unfortunately the last time I ate here my friend went into anaphalactic shock but the menu did clearly state it contained walnuts so this was no fault of the restaurant.
This is a chain group & another restaurant can be found in Willesden Green equally as good. They also offer a takeaway service.
