Lahore Kebab House

Reviews for Lahore Kebab House
This restaurant provides the best curry outside of Pakistan. The meals are fantastic and the staff are polite and friendly.
When we don't fancy Tayyabs queues but need an authentic curry fix, this runs it close yet is still a lot easier to get in. No point in repeating what previous reviewers have said except to agree. Harder to get to but it'll become another hit now it has been 'discovered' by the wider foodie community. Get there before the food critics discover it!
With Brick Lane's descent into tourism one shouldn't discount Banglatown in its entirety or you miss out on gems like this pace.
Lahore kebab is big, noisy and busy with a quite compact menu but the food is fantastic, especially the starters. On my first visit we took the recommended mixed starter (a collection of menu items rather than one) and were presented with kofte, cubed lamb and chicken kebabs and some delightfully hot lamb chops. All well seasoned, moist and nicely smokey.
For mains the chicken methi was the nicest curry I've had in a while and the buttery, flaky paratha the best example I've ever had.
I couldn't resist the same starters when I returned a week later but went for karahi chicken instead, good but not as good as the methi. Second visit my Switzerland living (and curry loving, not a good combination) mum came along and pronounced it the best meal of their UK visit.
Cost-wise mains are £7 meat/£5.50 veg and the BYO policy keeps it very reasonable - £15-£20 a head to leave bloated but smiling.
Get yourselves in here with a few cold Cobras from the offy at the junction with Commercial Road. Irrespective of the length of the queue (often out the door but wait it out), order mixed meat starters with breads for however many are in your party and prepare for fast service and a taste sensation. The chicken tikka, lamb tikka, tandoori chops and shami kebabs are AWESOME. Then, skip the mains (adequately average) and order...ANOTHER ROUND OF STARTERS!!! I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
OR call in and takeaway a chicken tikka roll and a lamb tikka roll - watch out, that sauce has a kick!
Lahore Kebab House is one of the best curry houses in london. Located in Aldgate, it is almost always full and there is sometimes a wait to get a table. The interior is nothing special and the place is very noisy (lots of diners, bollywood music on the TV screens). The Lamb Chops and Sheekh Kebabs are favourite for starters. A special dish is Lamb Nihari, but its not on offer always. Try it if its available.
The food is reasonably priced and the service is ok given that the staff are always busy. The Ambience is not that great but the food makes up for it and you have to bring your own alcohol, which is a plus for those on budget.
I often dine by myself and this place with its canteen like atmosphere is perfect for solo dining. However the portions served at this place are often too big for a single diner to complete the course. Bring some friends instead, in fact bring loads, for the cooking is A1.
Always go for the specials that are featured on Wednesdays or the weekend like Nihari or Chicken on the bone curry. These specials are generally not readily available till 1pm, so take note. These guys do not cut corners with the seasonings or cooking of their dishes; which thus reflect and attract a welcoming presence of large groups of Asian diners. The Grilled Lamb Chops are de rigueur, you'll need to order this dish at least to justify the reason to revisit LKH again. Just imagine Tony Bourdain chomping on these, 'These are good, these are very good'. 'nuff said.
One minor quibble involves the waiters placing a bottle of a horrible tasting English mineral water on the table which you're obliged to pay for. I politely asked for tap water instead and his answer was ''but no, that is bad for you''.
Right I need to visit Tayyabs now for some serious correlations. In the meantime, LKH you're the best.
I popped into this place last Wednesday evening because it's near to my new place of work and I'd heard positive feedback from various sources. It's tucked away on a particularly ugly stretch of Commercial Road but had a healthy number of diners when we arrived at 6pm so word has obviously gotten around.
I got the impression that this is slightly closer to a standard curry house than Tayyabs - for a start the poppadums were fully deep-fried and came with the traditional mango chutney and yoghurt sauce. However I did notice they were deep-fried very recently and still had a film of oil on the edges, which was nice, and the yoghurt sauce was slightly spiced, which added a bit of an edge to it.
Our starter really was exceptional - tikka lamb chops which were moist on the inside and covered in great tikka spiced just right. I would have been happy with plate after plate of these and was very sad to see them go - I half thought about ordering some more but decided against it.
The mains were more standard. Chicken Karahi was tasty enough but the meat was a bit dry; similarly the lamb curry was chewy and in both dishes there seemed to be a very mean amount of meat - just 5 or 6 pieces in a big bowl of sauce. Then again it was still a cut above your average curry house (and no more expensive) so no major complaints.
However, the crowning glory of the whole meal, the star of the show, was the garlic naan - unexpectedly lovely and with an amazing flavour. I don't know how they did it, but the toasted garlic tasted of almonds and were delightfully crunchy on the bite and melted in the mouth. We immediately ordered another once the first had gone.
I'd heard many negative reports of the service but we didn't notice anything too untoward ourselves, although we did have to ask for a mango lassie a few times before it arrived. If I'm paying less than £15 a head for a meal and the service is anything better than completely incompetent I don't think you have too much to moan about.
One final point of interest - despite calling itself a Kebab House, I'm not sure I noticed any kebab on the menu? Or maybe the greatness of the lamb tikka overshadowed all the other starters. Anyway, there you go - for a good cheap eat the Lahore ticks most of the right boxes, although I would still say Tayyabs is a more impressive experience overall.
6/10
P.S. I've just noticed how the pic of the main is slightly fuzzy whilst the courses I liked (the garlic naan and the chops) are again perfectly in focus. I honestly don't do this deliberately guys, I just appear to have a sentient cameraphone.
Having read numerous reviews of the Lahore Kebab House I was keen to try it myself.
Three of us visit on a Wednesday night. The place is huge and as others have said fairly basic. It reminded me of a (good) works restaurant.
There was a lot of staff and overall the service was good.
Our views on the food were mixed:
Poppadoms – slightly overcooked and the mango sauce and mint sauce were very thin and tasteless.
The mixed platter starter – chicken tikka, lamb tikka, sheek kebab and lamb chops was excellent especially the chops and bread. Their reputation is well deserved.
Main courses include:
Fish curry – good, but not outstanding
A ‘special’ based on a lamb shank. This looked fatty and the sauce watery and unappetising.
Chicken dhal – Very good, plentiful and good quality chicken and full of flavour
Rice dishes were good and very generous. Nann breads were small, thin and not the best at all.
Whilst reasonable it was not cheap when you think that there was no drinks on the bill (it’s a BYO).
Am I pleased I went? – Yes
Would I go again? – No
Would I recommend it to others? I would suggest that it is a worthwhile experience, but be aware of the hype. As I said the place was packed so there must be many other that think otherwise.
The best 'Indian', well Pakistani, food place in London: Grilled meats, fish and non-meat dishes. Simple, fast and good. Becoming well known so may not be so good for that long?
Great food find apart from a slight hitch - The bill came up to 10 pounds more than it actually should have been. We went with a friend who had been there before and was familiar with the prices so she picked it up. So I would say just remember to cast a closer look the next time..No complaints otherwise!

I've heard that the original Lahore in Mill Hill is superb but I've yet to try this one. I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!
