Reviews for Monmouth Coffee Company
As an Italian coffee freak I trust Monmouth as one of the consistently good coffee places in London. I don't like the attitude of the Borough Market Shop staff, therefore I go to the Monmouth st one.
Although recently it got a bit more moody, it is usually one of the best macchiati in London. I also get the Brazilian beans to use home with my Rancilio and the output is usually fantastic.
If you think of Nero and Costa as your McDonald's, think of Monmouth as your Wholefoods.
Monmouth make seriously good coffee. One of a handful of places in london where you can get a decent latte. Sorry - no trim milk here they use non pasturised organic whole milk, but I'd happily be fat in exchange for the quality of their coffee. The food is pretty good too and you can visit the markets afterwards! For those that prefer to make coffee at home, they also have a great selection of beans.
I go to the one on Monmouth Street more now because it's closer to work, but this is the first location I went to way back when.
You still get the great, cheap cup of coffee, and here, unlike Monmouth Street, you can sit on the wooden benches around the tables and eat jam and bread for an extra £2.50! Pretty good value, considering.
Great place to take a break from a hectic weekend Borough Market shop as well.
The beans are great, don't get me wrong, but a lot of people are queuing up because the experience is quintessential borough market and, well, because everyone else is queuing up. I ordered a cappuccino and my friend a latte, and they made the drinks exactly the same - a shot of espresso and dump in milk until it reaches the rim. If your business is coffee, you should at least know the difference between these two staples!
Surprised it took me so long to get around reviewing Monmouth. Maybe I want LESS people to go so I don't have to queue. There's also a stall in Borough Market itself and another store (the original?) in Covent Garden, but this is MY store. Love it.
Laughingly there are a few Starbucks within spitting distance - with the emphasis on spitting. How they have nerve to call that crap 'coffee' when the real deal is so close by.
Sometimes I just go to LOOK at the beans. I've sat outside in the pouring rain and that coffee still kept me warm.
The best coffee I have had anywhere (well, except Laos but that's a bit further afield!). Great location bang in the heart of Borough Market (which also gets 5 stars), there is another Monmouth Coffee Company in the Market itself, which is more like a market stall, great for a quick takeaway. The main one on the corner is open, bustling and makes you realise just how generic the likes of Starbucks and Costa have become, no comparison.
They is also do bread and jam on the long central wooden table (help yourself and pay a flat fee), and cakes and biscuits laid out on a counter. In the summer the jam and cakes attracted quite a few wasps which the staff didn't seem to care about which put me off having anything to eat here, but then that's not why you come here anyway.
One other thing to bear in mind, the double espresso really is the strongest coffee I have ever had, in fact I think that applies to all their coffee. You have been warned!
In a city like London, you don't make calls like 'the best in London' lightly, but this is a rare occasion when the phrase is well-deserved and near incontestable. They not only really know their stuff, but they actually seem to give a crap about their product. Brilliant all round.
Excellent coffee (they also sell beans) and friendly service. The breakfasts also look fantastic - there is butter and pots of jam on the long central table, for you to help yourself... the only problem is that every time I've got there every space is already occupied!
If there is a place in London that sells better tasting lattes I have yet to find it. I'm lucky enough to work near the Monmouth Street shop and I count my blessings everytime a workmate says "I'm going to Monmouth, anyone want a coffee".
If you're near a Monmouth coffee shop and you're relying on Starbucks to meet your caffeine needs then you should be ashamed of yourself!
best coffee in london.
some of the desserts are from Paul which is great!
