Reviews for Royal Opera House

I love the Royal Opera House, I have seen many many ballets & opera's here- Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, La Traviata, Un Ballo, Tosca, The Barber of Seville, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, Ondine & have recently bought a 'Total opera' package for the upcoming Autumn operas... However I think people have the wrong idea about the ROH, its NOT horribly expensive to get a ticket- you can get some very resonsable priced seats in the Amphitheatre & slips for all performances- I paid £9 to La Traviata & Tosca in the upper slips seat DD21, and £12.50 to see the Barber of Seville in W61- these prices make it not that much dearer than the cinema (actually cheaper than the West End cinema prices!). How to get good cheap seats: Book on line- you need to book on the day the tickets are released (even though it involves lots of stress!) as the seats (esp. the good cheap ones) sell out very fast, however I have recently found that if you wait until a day or two before a performance & check on line you can often get a seat from a returned ticket for a performance which was previously sold out.

The Royal Opera house is a very nice building located right in the Centre of London’s West End and the performances they put on there are usually very good. However I find the ticket prices astoundingly expensive e.g. when I wanted to go and see Candide performed here. Generally, for the back seat at the opera you could afford 1-2 best seats to go and see Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Haymarket. I realise not everyone likes musicals who likes opera but this is what I generally do. Save this for a very special occasion, otherwise do something else on your day/ night out.

We noticed the Royal Opera House tucked away in the corner of Covent Garden on our way to the market. We discovered that they do a backstage tour for the very reasonable price of £9.00 a ticket. As very non-opera people, I was a bit worried we might be a bit out of place but it was fascinating. We sat in the magnificent auditorioum whilst they set up for the opening night of Carmen and were given a really interesting history of the theatre and its recent refurbishment. We were able to view the backstage area, props department and even got to watch the ballet dancers from the Royal Ballet rehearse an upcoming performance. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful, and the building itself is amazing. We came away with a great insight into the most used working theatre in Europe and wanting to go and see a performance. Well worth a visit!
