Reviews for Natural History Museum
We took our 7 year old to the natural history museum and she enjoyed the outing there. We also had an amazing time comparing sizes of different animals. It was mind boggling to see the size of a blue whale. The dinosaur display was very exciting for us adults but the moving Tyranosaurus Rex scared our daughter. However, make no mistake, the display is very life-like with the sounds and moving displays. Also, this is a free-entry museum and during the current credit crunch climate, it is a day out for free with educational benefits and fun at the same time.
Not only does the building itself look intriguing from the outside but the displays inside are brilliant. You won’t miss the life size creatures, especially the dinosaur that greets you at the entrance, and the wonderful memoirs you can buy at the shop. There are interesting facts for the adults and interactive pieces for the kids so everyone is entertained. Seriously, I learn something new every time I go there. The only bad thing could be the number of people that visit, tourists in the summer and school children during term time, but don’t let that put you off as it can sometimes add to the atmosphere. The museum is easy to find from the station as there are signposts. And best of all, most of the collections are free to view so a cheap day out. I highly recommend this museum.
The Natural history museum is so memorable everyone remembers the huge dinosaur at entrance to the museum, dippy in the central hall. The museum is situated opposite the science museum on exhibition road and near south Kensington station. The museum is home to a huge giant squid and several animatronics dinosaurs (that kids will love). In the winter it is possible to ice skate outside the museum and there is also a Christmas market during the festive season. The architure of the building is grand and neo-gothical and very imposing and Victorian. The earth galleries in an extension to the original building are also well worth a visit.
The Natural History Museum is another great museum in South Kensington (along with the Science museum and the Victoria and Albert), a treat for kids and adults alike. A huge number of very impressive collections, most notably the dinosaurs exhibitions, and in particular the huge diplodocus in the main hall which never ceases to impress. There’s also the geological museum to visit, which is also interesting. One particular annual highlight is the Wildlife Photography Competition, where the winning photographs are on display in a special exhibition, and though you do have to pay for special exhibitions like this, the majority of the museum is completely free.
First off, the building is absolutely stunning!! And as one of the largest museums in Europe, you will not be disappointed. Easy to find from South Kensington station (or other), and right next to the Science museum and victoria and albert museum, if you want to cram it all in! But I'd advice them all seperately cos there is so much to look at. Great for kids and adults alike. Free to enter, and exhibs on a range of stuff from dinasours to other animals such as insects and mammals. Some great interactive features for children, and really interesting information for everyone alike.
Besides the stunning buildings that house the museum’s collections and the impressive array of exhibits, the best point of all is that admission is free which means it’s a great place to go for a family day out.
There is so much to see and at times you really need to stand and try and take all of the displays in and read all of the details and descriptions because there are so many bits that are relevant to each area and that are really interesting. Some of the moving displays are also very good. In the dinosaur area they had some moving raptors (from Jurassic Park) on a dinosaur scene which were very life like.
Also in one of the main halls they have a life size blue whale which really stuns you into silence when you see the size of it close up.
fantastic, great for all ages. great place to take children it has exhibits to entertain everyone and so much to see. it has many places to eat including indoor and outdoor picnic areas. there are many things too see and do and it doesnt cost you anything
Can not fault in any way! The highlight for us was the dinosaurs section and well worth the 30 min wait. I would recommend to anyone in the area with at least an hour to spare. 2 adults and 2 children spent around 3 hours visiting and would go again. The only thing I would change is to go out of high season as it was a bit crowded at times and it was difficult to get past people in the dinosaur section walking across the top part. Other thing which is worth a mention if going on a budget is I saw lots of people using the water fountains to refill their plastic water bottles - worth doing as in the shop its £1.20 for a bottle! Well worth a visit by young and old
Great place to go on your own or with the kids.
Always something new to look at or learn about,
we take the family quite a lot as its free ,
very central ,easy to get to ,5 mins from the station and loads of buses stop near by,
lovely grounds so take a picnic because to buy anything nearby is very expensive.
Educational and fun a grat day can be had by all, also other museums near by so can easily make a whole day out of it.
This is a simply brilliant museum and is free to enter, although you have to pay to enter the special exhibition area, but this is standard with most museums. Collections include dinosaurs, spiders, life sized models of some of the largest mammals, impressive geology collections an earthquake simulator (I found this particularly interesting). Yu could easily spend a day here and still not get around everything there is that much to do. If you’re into nature and only have a day to spend in London then this is the place to come and visit. It’s just as short walk from South Kensington tube station.
