Reviews for The Cobden Club

I think the reviews are apt and I've played here over half a dozen times. The upstairs hall is very ambient, reminds me of a 40's burlesque theme. Downstairs they host smaller audiences, still very chilled vibe. The entry staff are always really polite and friendly and the other acts on are often good to get on with and a good quality of mixed talent. I'm never embaressed to say "please come along" unlike some other places I've performed. It's ll good! www.myspace.com/shadowlandsuk (GIG THIS WED 8th APRIL )member only so please email the myspace.

Ridiculously cool and atmospheric, this place is like a dream. Can be full of society wankers sometimes but there are also some personality gems amongst the regulars. Particularly if you go when there’s a show on. Membership fee’s are sky high (Jon Snow is one) so keep your eye’s out for special shows etc and get yourselves on the guest list. Unless of course you do happen to be rich and/or famous, in which case-join and invite me!

Head to The Cobden Club of the 3rd Saturday of each month for ROCKABARET. I can't put it in words, you must see it by yourself:

Excellent food and a nice atmosphere. Considering where the club is; it's a rather upmarket place. (I had to step over used condoms on the way there - not unusual for an East London boy like me).

A bit expensive, and their talk about 'Notting Hillbilly/Trustafarian' makes my teeth itch, but you get what you pay for which is excellent food and an oasis of niceness in a rough part of town.

A fun place and a great party! Thanks to Trusted Places for a lively night out.

it was great fun in the 90s...

It's a nice place. A bit posh, but nice.

Located in a wonderful Grade II listed building on Kensal Road, we have recently undergone a major refurbishment.

On the ground floor is the new Kensal Lounge. It is a contemporary and artistic space, evocative of a New York warehouse.

On the first floor the Restaurant and Lounge bar now have a brighter and more vibrant feel without losing their elegance.

Our stunning Grand Hall has a new bar, extra lighting and leather furniture, but keeps many of its original classical Victorian features.

We have an eclectic mix of members - bohemian Notting Hillbillies, musicians, artists, aristos and trustafarians. This mix of discerning patrons combined with friendly staff, wonderful food and drink and exciting events, creates an ideal environment to hang out, dine or network, whatever your mood.

Walid's and Sokratis' descriptions are comprehensive – check them out. I had invited them to the night through another friend of mine without really knowing what to expect from a ‘Rockcabaret' night. I really liked the venue. It spans 3 floors, an elegant restaurant (good food), a cocktail bar, and a room at the top, which is where the event took place. The room was spacious, had a stage, a funky deco and low lighting. I enjoyed the uniqueness of Rockcabaret, if dressing up extravagantly is your thing (or watching people parade in their themed party clothes!) then you'll enjoy it there. Alternative, burlesque, quite weird at times. I enjoyed the atmosphere although the music was a bit too hard rock for me. I couldn't really dance to it. Overall, good if you're looking for something out of the ordinary, and on another night, the club is definitely worth it. (I hear it's members only though - and I'm not one!)

So I get this text message on Saturday on whether I want to go to a Cabaret night. Images of Paris, maybe post-war Berlin come to mind so I say of course yes. So off I go to Westbourne Park and the Cobden Club. Now the place does not say much from the outside, nor from the inside as soon as you walk in. Head over to the 2nd and 3rd floors though and that perception changes. The restaurant is quite elegant and the food decent and reasonably priced. Not a huge selection to choose from and some of the fish portions that the waiter was carrying made go me for the chargrilled baby chicken instead. Not a bad choice at all. But anyways the thing I'll remember most were the oval shaped glasses that fit very nicely to your hand Big ergonomical improvement to the old cylindrical vessels in my opinion, perhaps a bit more risky in terms of slippage – anyways this tells you quite a bit about the food (the crème of aubergine soop was quite nice though)…..

2nd floor and you are greeted, by the club/cocktail bar, which features a performing stage as well. Very impressive venue. Nicely designed, low light, but not too dark. Edgy, but not grotty. Cobden claims to be a members club and according to them you have to be invited by two members or one committee member. I'm not one if you're thinking of asking. This is their website if you want to check them out http://www.cobdenclub.co.uk/. Definitely a recommended venue for something out of the ordinary.

Now about the cabaret. Some of it was interesting, like the woman that was throwing flames through her mouth and the erotic (in the mildest sense of the word) dance. Some of it was for an acquired taste, like the transvestite performer. And some of it was downright bizarre, like the guy with the leather G-string, the hat and the mask that was reciting something that seemed to be quite profound to him, but all I could hear the occasionally ‘his/her willy' and some other muttering. Full marks for the effort to him though. This is their website http://www.rockabaret.co.uk. The crowd was alternative too, really into their fancy dressing (cross-dressing for some). Everyone was having a great time and was very friendly. Overall I had a great night out. Go to a RockCabaret night if you get the chance.
