Reviews for Koko
I went on a Friday night and they had great music to dance to and a good crowd (without too many weird men trying it on! lol). I thought the drinks were pretty expensive (£3.40 for a pint of Fosters?!!) but then again, I'm not used to buying my own drinks :D
I love the setup of the place, so many little nooks and crannies to wander around in. It was a bit weird when a band came on and played a gig in the middle of the night but I actually really enjoyed it even though I didn't know their stuff (they were called South Centred).
I wish I lived nearer to this place because then I could go every week!! Too bad
Great night out on a friday if you're into indie music and live bands because it's NME night. Only costs £5 to get in but if you aren't there early enough then there is a big queue, the first 100 people get in free. The drinks are a little expensive but there are deals on some drinks. The bars can be quite busy but there are a few bars.
Good place to go if you like indie music, they dont generally play anything else, other than when they do the album chart show filming there for channel four, also have celeb events there! quite cheap to get in only £5 plus a queue jump, also resomably priced drinks.
Koko is good on a friday night if you are interested in indie music as they have live bands on stage (some signed, some unsigned. and only £5 entry, can have very long queues though.
Also they host the album chart show, where you can go and see the filming of the show with sarah cox
Although Koko seems like a good venue. But it's horrible for live shows if you don't get there early. Even though the venue has many levels but there are lots of obstructed views.
The first time I went to Koko was to see Trail of Dead, that was great because I had an AAA pass, and could watch the show behind the madness on stage. Complicated route to get up to the dressing room, it was like a maze itself.
The second time, I was there for another Texan band Explosions in the Sky. We got there as the headliner was about to go on. We saw one sorta empty balcony on the left (facing stage) but there was no way to get to it, we spend so much time trying to find the entrance, we looked and walked through the entire venue and when we find it, the view ain't that great.
So we went back to the main floor, for some reason there were lots of tall guys at the show. Couldn't see anything until the last 2 songs.
I went to Koko to see Basement Jaxx in the BBC Electric Proms. The place is amazing, a really pleasant change from the normal dank live music venues.
I'd love to go there on a club night to see what it's like.
Coco (Formerly Camden Palace) is a top venue, regardless what you are into. I have been to banging house/trance/wuphoric nights, Drumb and Bass nights, Hip Hop nights, and fetish nights. What ever you are into, the chances are that Coco will hold a night there soon!:)
When it was Camden Palace, i was a weekly regular to "Peach".
A must for any clubber
I don't think I've been to another club like Koko's. The whole club looks like a movie set or an opera hall. I think it was a Victorian theatre, whihc explains a lot. The best of it comes out as a live gig venue, but it also works really well as just a club.
