Reviews for Porthole Comedy Club
The Porthole Comedy Club is a relatively new night and the lack of experience of the compere does tend to put an unprofessional edge on things. However, it is a very personal night. You'll get to meet the comedians and compere and have a chat about the show - there's no backstage area for them to hide in. There are only about twenty seats, plus standing area, which makes it very cosy and friendly.
I've been to two nights here. The first was a regular night with a selection of comedians of varying quality, from reasonably good to downright awful, but they muddled through and the friendly atmosphere won through. A hightlight was when James Everett (the compere) was surprised by being presented with birthday cakes by two of his friends. Of course, everyone in the audience got offered a slice too!
The second was a Fringe Preview by Matt Kirschen and Nick Doody and generally went very well. As can be expected for a preview the shows were unpolished and this wasn't helped by the lack of stage-preparation (problems with the microphone cord, and setting up the stage for Nick's act).
So, it's a nice, friendly, personal atmosphere with the occasional good comic on stage, held loosely together by the slightly strained efforts of Mr. Everett.
One big downside is the price of the booze. I'm not sure how they get away with charging that much for a pint, but they give it a good try. I might expect these prices in Soho, but not in Kilburn.
Grab a flyer if you can for a pound of the 5 pound entrance.
