A hidden little gem of a cafe away from the bustling streets of central London. Simple healthy snacks and large wooden tables + high ceilings. Like a snack bar in the middle of an art gallery.

The Photographer's Gallery is to the Tate Modern what a weekend break to Brighton is to a 2-week holiday to Ibiza. A much shorter version on the same theme, requiring much less commitment but not necessarily delivering much less of the pleasure. That's why I like it. You can be in and out in 20 minutes, get your inspiration, culture fix or whatever you call it, and go on to your business (or whatever you call it). The space clean and open , the café nice and quiet and of course it's free.
Go to the Deutsche Börse (note how the umlauts make the most mundane things sound cool) Photography Prize Exhibition – open until April 9. You get to see some insights on places you probably have not been to.
Philippe Chancel takes you to bizarre North Korea (8 lane motorways with a handful of cars on them is one example) over some incredibly crisp images. I really cannot imagine what it must like living in a country with such crazy despots. Of course Turkmenistan's late Niyazof does take the biscuit in terms of sheer megalomania but good ol' Kim wins on the danger stakes.
Moving on to the photos again Anders Petersen shows a truly gritty, dirty and, to some, disturbing view of France in the cities of Gap and St Etienne. The dirty here is meant in a literal sense.
Fiona Tan's pics look more than holiday photos your mates took. Maybe that was the point, but I've seen plenty of those already.
Anyways, I'm not an art critic…what do I know about photography? Best to go by yourselves and check it out.

good point about the umlauts. they're the original smiley face...though the 'o' with umlaut is more of a shocked face.

how's that for intellectual insight eh?

Gallery and cafe in a secret location near Leicester Sq 26th October 2006

Hidden away on a side street a stone's throw from Covent Garden and Leicester Square, yet for some reason not many people know about this place. It's a free gallery with a laid back cafe inside - absolutely perfect for a pitstop if you're out shopping or for meeting friends in town. Good value coffee and cakes, and yummy sandwiches and salads. It's an airy white space with long wooden tables where you can sit and read the papers and while away a few hours without anyone hassling you. Plus there's always some new and interesting photography on the walls as a backdrop. It's open daytimes only - the cafe closes at 5.30pm (7.30pm on Thursdays). Viewing Bert Teunissen's Domestic Scenes, allows one then to enjoy a cafe+more while talking about the show... good suggestion... in the shop they probably also sell a level for your cam to get the skew correct... ;)
