Reviews for Domali Cafe
Domali is a little gem of a place - a charming arty rustic veggie restaurant/cafe. It has a great atmosphere - very relaxing and chilled without being too "quiet". Best coffee/choc ever, good beer & wine, good food = mainly veggie chunky chips, salads, fish. It also has yummy desserts and cakes - you have to try the rich chocolate torte.
Most importantly of all, is it serves lovely coffee, and HOT WHITE CHOCOLATE which is DIVINE!! So go there immediately and order one!
There's a lovely sunny garden at the back which is great in summer.
The service is a bit "hit and miss" so don't go there if you're in a hurry!!
Domali (the exotic name comes from the names of the owners - Dominic and Alison!) is a great place, and serves the nicest hot chocolate I have ever tasted (ask for the Koko Deluxe!).
I had a FEB sanwich - Fried Egg and Bacon, however they insist on offering only Vegetarian Sausages and Bacon. Which is odd, when salmon, cod and eggs were on the menu! I can cope with veggie sausages, but veggie bacon just looks and feels wrong. The sandwich was served in massive doorstep slices, which was great, and I also had a side order of lovely chunky chips. My friend had scrambled eggs with salmon and sill, and he felt that the dill was too overpowering for the fish.
Service was friendly, although at the start we felt like we were being served by a school teacher who would give us lines if we didn't clear our plate! This was reinforced by the menu which stated 'NO SUBSTITUTIONS' on the full English breakfast option, which I felt was unncessary. (I remember being told in a Littlewoods cafe years ago that the breakfast was 5 items for £1.49, and if I wanted Item 5, a tomato, removed -not substituted- I would be charged extra, so maybe I am just sensitive to these kind of rules!) I am sure they have their reasons, but if it's such as issue then just price the items separately. NO SUBSTITUTIONS just made the place seem regimented. As I say, I'm probably too sensitive and in reality, this is just a minor niggle, and Domali is well worth a try. Sipping rich, hot chocolate on a wet Sunday afternoon in October, as the daylight fades and the streetlights come on, is one of life's simple pleasures, and I will definitely be back.
Ideal for a chilled Sunday afternoon with papers and some fantastic organic food. But then again I once had my birthday party there, so you can safely assume it'll live up to your expectations whatever they might be.
They used to have DJs at weekends, playing anything from 70s soul to modern chill-out, but I haven't been there recently, so can't really say whether this is still the case.
The garden is a bit poky, but since we don't have summers in this country any more, this shouldn't be much of a problem.
I go to Domali at least twice a month for lunch. I work from home and it is a tasty treat for all my hard work. Lunchtimes is the preference for food as the specials such as the salmon bruschetta (wow) are half price. I'm not a cheapskate but I wouldn't pay full price for the same meal a few hours later. However, the happy (2) hours are worth checking out - half price cocktails etc and I love their Champagne Cocktails. Lovely little garden and one of the only places in Crystal Palace that has table service, huge chunks of cheese on toast, freshly made detox juices and the chance of catching some rays on a sunny day!
Very charming and nice coffee shop (beware their regular coffees are very small).
Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere of sunday people drinking coffees, shakes and reading their papers.
The food looked and smelled very nice (I didn't have any but was covertly looking at the next tables cheese on toast). Which smelt divine.
The hot chocolate was creamy and delicious (well needed on a cold day).
