My boyfriend and I sometimes pop in here on a Saturday morning for breakfast - the granola and yoghurt is just lovely and the people are so friendly. There's free WiFi access too so if you are working from home and want to get out of the house for a while, it;s great to come here with a laptop, order a cup of tea and a slice of cake and just quietly work away...occasionally stopping ofr a chat with the guys that work there. As it;s not on West End Lane it never gets stupidly busy on the weekend and you can always get a table. Ver ychilled, very nice.

I came across the Kitchen Table by accident on a wet Saturday in West Hampstead. My friends and I were tired and lost and very hungry. When we stumbled in Jenny was really helpful and chatty and immediately made us feel at home. There was some relaxing music on and she was making a cake while her husband came over and talked us through their long list of teas and homemade sweets. My friend Em had a beautiful fennel salami sandwich followed by hot chocolate (made with flakes of real chocolate) and a slice of pie while Alex had a bacon sandwich with roasted tomatoes that he swears is the best he's ever had. I had an amazing bowl of warming French onion soup with gorgonzola croutons but still managed a slice of deep black flourless choclate cake. It was still raining when we finished so we sat and browsed through the piles of well thumbed cookbooks while chatting to Jenny about the area. I've been hoping to move closer to West Hampstead and if I do I know this place will become like a second home.

Yet another reason to prolong your stay in a part of London that still boasts real people: West Hampstead's 'The Kitchen Table'. If some of the best coffee and cake in North London weren't enough, proprietors Tom and Jennie's affability and genuine charm make the cafe a hugely relaxing place to enjoy a mid-week lunch or Saturday morning fry up. Rustic wooden tables and chairs, with some communal picnic table-style seating reminds you of Le Pain Quotidien before it went the way of Starbucks. It's a shame they're not open in the evenings and Sunday when we would need them most, but I guess they have to bake their cookies and pies at home sometime. If you can stand the odd screaming toddler and avoid death by Mill Lane bus on the way there, The Kitchen Table is hard to beat. Don't miss the muesli and compote and chocolate chip cookies.
