Reviews for Lamb & Flag
This is indeed a very charming pub for a drink, but keep away from the food, its the very worst of British food! I made the mistake of taking some friends from France for a Sunday roast here and it was embarrassing! Hard peas, carrots straight from a tin, over cooked beef, boiled cabbage, etc! OMG I thought this didn't exist anymore in 21st century Britain! But I was wrong, bad cooking is still very much a part of our culture it seems, at least at the Lamb and Flag!!
Slightly hidden away, between Leicester Square and Covent Garden, but soon detected on a pleasant evening (by the huge crowds standing around outside). This is a nice, old pub - one of the many 'oldest pub in London' pubs and visibly antiquated. Inside, the pub has a cosy atmosphere, with lots of ancient timber beams and panelling, and a fire at the back. Regardless of it being old and 'listed', the owners have ripped part of the traditional shopfront out and replaced it with an opening and folding window.
The first floor bar tends to be a bit quieter, as most people seem to prefer to stand outside (and be seen!). The bar menu is basic and largely cooked on site. The beer is variable, although a range of decent bitters (in reasonable condition) are usually available. The owners have introduced some crowd control, in order to keep the passageway to Floral Street open, but large groups of punters pay little regard.
Nice, little pub that tends to be a bit overrated. Its success as a tourist honey trap is hampered by its extremely busy and slightly unfriendly atmosphere. I wouldn't go here for the quality of the beer, but great for people watching!
The Lamb and the Flag is a pub located close to Covent Garden market. It is situated in a quiet street but the pub is always very crowded.
It’s an old pub with good food (sandwiches, salads, roasts), good beer (even the Japanese kirin ichiban) and it is not very expensive.
A good place to stay for a while, the ambient is really nice.
Depending on the hour and the day, you may struggle to even get inside.
Some tables and chairs in the dinning floor are too old, meaning a bit uncomfortable and the condition of the pub is not very good, when it is raining you can see water falling from the ceiling.
It has no beer garden.
One of the oldest surviving pubs in London, so it's on many people's do to list for that reason alone. Fortunately, the L&F is a nice little boozer quite apart from the historic novelty factor. Lovely old oak-beam rooms and a decent selection of real ales pick this place out amongst the chain dross of Covent Garden - it's no wonder it's always so busy, no matter what time of day or night.
The Lamb & Flag is a good, traditional pub located in a side street in Covent Garden. However, being slightly off the beaten track doesn't mean that it's quiet - it's usually full both at lunchtimes and evenings, and in warmer weather drinkers spill out on to the pavement outside. Inside, it's an old-school boozer, with a reasonable range of beer and a somewhat stodgy food menu.
One of my top 5. Always take friends who are not necessarily familiar with the concept of a good, old fashioned London boozer there. No-nonsense staff, good beer, I'm told the food is good too, beautiful building inside and out. The gents tend to be ..."pungent" but I suppose it all adds to the genuine "pubbiness" of it. I enjoyed the thick haze of smoke that used to veil the down stairs bar but not to everyone's taste I'm sure. Remember to check for seats upstairs!
The lamb was a little gem in covent garden tucked away down a little road. The pub looks like a normal grotty pub but what made it special was the pub landlord who was friendly and chatty even though the pub was packed full of people inside and outside of it. And on top of that the security guard Morris was a doll as well which is very unusual for security in london establishments!
My friend got an wanted a white ale, so got an indian one as recommended by the landlord. We stood outside in the little street as the weather for once was nice.
The vibe was nice and the staff were very friendly. Next time i will try to get there when its not a thursday to get a table and try out the food.
The Lamb & Flag is a small wooden-fronted pub hidden away in Covent Garden. At over 300 years old, it is the oldest pub in the area. It was once known as the 'Bucket of Blood' due to the bare-knuckle fights that used to be held there.
This is a very traditional British pub, with its wooden panelling, low beams and bare wooden floors. At the rear of the pub is an inviting fireplace surrounded by wooden settles.
Serving up a decent selection of real ale for the beer lovers out there, the Lamb & Flag can get pretty crammed at times. You may have more luck heading up the creaky old stairs to the upstairs bar and restaurant area to enjoy your drink.
In the summer, the courtyard outside the pub is roped-off creating a large paved area for the after-work crowd to congregate with a cold pint or two.
This is a non-poncy bar in the middle of Covent Garden. Still gets very busy on Thursday and Fridays though when everyone likes to loiter outside on the cobbles. It is on a lovely little street that links Garrick Street to Long Acre and has a lot of character. My colleague tells me they too good pub grub too. Word of warning - don't attempt to get through the ginnel if you're very tall (or fat)!
