There's not really much point reviewing The New Crown (so named because it's opposite where The Crown once was). The pub occupies an area that was once a Sainsbury's, which is probably all you need to know about the type of ambience. It's a large, open, pub with a fair amount of nooks and crannies down one wall; decorated in typical Wetherspoon comfortable wood, but probably many years ago since it's all a bit worn and grubby.

Wetherspoons pubs, because of their cheapness, appear to attract a peculiar clientele. Most of the week, you'll find a selection of grizzled old men and the occasional student. Friday nights and Saturday nights, the place transforms itself into a busy, loud, mecca for the young (but then, every pub in Southgate does).

The food is cheap, plentiful, and a tad bland. The drink selection is pretty good, with a few guest beers always on tap (although over the last five years the amount of guest beers has drastically reduced here). There's free wifi, too - which now comes as standard in all Wetherspoons when you buy a drink. I've not tried it, mind.

The absence of music and large non-smoking area makes it a pleasant place to spend a few hours over a weekend. The beer is normally fairly well kept. You can't help feel that this is still Sainsbury's though - there's no character to the place. But then, when the beer's cheap and the food's cheap, and you can hear yourself think, why worry?
