Reviews for Gordon's Wine Bar
Love this place - went with a few mates for a bottle of vin or two later in the evening. What fun we had spotting all the people who were clearly having affairs. Not only is it dark, candlelit and intimate, but it also has the added bonus of no mobile phone signal whatsoever, meaning you have to talk to the people you're with which makes a refreshing change.
It's got a definite Dickensian feel and I wouldn't have been surprised to have seen Bill Sykes and Bullseye sitting moodily at the bar.
At 5'4" even I had to mind my head on the low ceilings so be a bit careful after a few glasses.
Best place to drink around the Embankment. Full of character. Low ceilings under the barrel vaults makes for an intimate candlelight rendezvous.
Dank and dark, if you haven't been you can't call yourself a Londoner - don't even try: Go, and go early before the pre-theatre crowd descend from their spreadsheets upon the rim of their wine glasses like the nervous, soul-starved, vicarious-living texters they are...My Top Tip: get the cheese platter to share with a double serving of bread and don't bother with the house wine - it's the vineyard floor-scrapings squashed by the new-guy with athlete's foot that they palm off to the cheap punters - hey, it's a business after all. Good date venue see above note about getting there early and sharing a cheese platter.
Gordon’s Wine Bar is quite unique. You’ll find it in between Charing Cross and Embankment tube station, on a tiny entrance on Villiers Street – if you weren’t looking for it you probably would have missed it. You then go down a steep narrow flight of stairs and emerge into a unique atmosphere.
Gordon’s is quiet but noisy at the same time, light and yet dark with secluded corners, it has cobwebbed wine bottles and candle lights that all bring you in a very special frame of mind. It unfortunately can get crowded and getting a seat can be a challenge but the atmosphere is well worth it.
Their choice of wines is quite extensive from old world to new world. The food is alright not as exquisite as their wines. The staff is both friendly and knowledgeable compared to most other places.
All in all it’s a good place to have a drink with a few friends, talk literature, the weather, politics or anything you want. Can’t wait to go back there!
This is one of those places most women would like to be taken out for a date... that is assuming one is lucky enough to get one of those candle-lit tables in the darker corners of the wine cellar, which seems to be a very rare thing to happen. As it's close to my workplace, I don't know just how many times I have been there but I could count the numbers of times we managed to get a seat on one hand. Nevertheless, this is a great place for some truly decent wine (as opposed to the vinegar most other pubs/bars seems to serve) in a unique atmosphere. For some reason, I've never sampled the food there but asking around people seem to be rather split on its quality. In short, go and have a glass (or two) of some wine (ask the guy behind the bar - he's a very approachable and non-pretentious wine expert). You'll love it.
