Reviews for Gordon's Wine Bar
What can I say? Was introduced to this bar ona romantic meeting :-) Can't wait to have another! But back to the task in hand!
This is such at an atmospheric place with the added bonuses of good wine and food! As a previous reviewer said..No lager louts..superb! Close to the river for a romantic walk before or after visit...... it's perfect! The cellar is so cosy and subtle.... blokes ...if you want to impress...this is THE place to go without breaking the bank!!!! take me take me!
having said all that...I'd happily go with mates fro a lunch time drink/food as a break from the shopping...though would probably end up staying there for rest of day ( now there's another idea blokes! lol)
I just wish there were more of these places around!
I love, love, LOVE this place. It has absolutely bundles of character! With a fantastic wine list comprising of affordable (starting at around £14) bottles right through to pure indulgent ones! They have a great selection of cheeses, cold meats, pickles and breads to accompany a bottle or two! Perfect for a relaxed afternoon, away from the hustle and bustle of central London. The candle lit cellar makes a perfect romantic setting. Get there early so you can grab a table, they don’t allow bookings unfortunately. It’s very easy to miss as it’s so make sure you keep your eyes peeled!
Now this is a date venue if ever there was one... The wine-only bar ensures that the usual lager jackasses aren't in attendence and the dark, candlelit cellars are conducive to getting close...
Beyond that though, it's one of the few places that serve Port, Sherry and other fortified wines by both the glass and bottle and what's more doesn't break the bank. The wine list in general is so wide as to be a little bit intimidating but the bar staff and knowledgable and helpful when it comes to ordering.
If the hot and sometimes sweaty cellar is too much, it's also got a nice outdoors area overlooking the park by Embankment tube. Food is served too and looks good, but I've not actually sampled it myself.
If you are ever lucky or early enough to get a table, Gordon's is a fascinating slice of grimy London history and a fantastic place to bring timid foreign tourists, if only to freak them out so much they'll want to get on the next plane home. It's literally a shallow, sweaty cave underneath Charing Cross station which sells port, wine and cheese by candlelight, and has to be seen to be believed. Trusted Places' "underground" keyword has never been so apt.
If you want to take a visitor to London anywhere, then I recommend this. They won't beleive it passes any health regs at all and that you are actually allowed in. It has character oozing from every crack and peeling of paint.
This is the best and last great winery in London. There is a dark dank under pavement cellars that you practically have to crawl down. Fantastic, you can drink port by the pint! If you get there and stay sober long enough you may even line your stomach with some fantastic cheese and bread, which I can heartily recommend. Saved me more than once. Great quality cheeses and breads and classically simple.
I love this place.
Without a doubt my favourite bar in London, with character in spades and a storming (and decently-priced) wine list to boot. Their food is apparently really good too - I've grazed the cheese board a little and they were exceptionally well-kept, which bodes well for the rest of the menu.
It's a shame it's so rammed all the time, but that's the price of success I suppose, and somehow standing shoulder to shoulder with complete strangers whilst bent double under a strangely moist ceiling in semi-darkness is part of Gordons' unique charm. If you're heading here in the evening, pray for clement weather, when you can stand outside and maintain your own personal space to some degree.
And now for something completely different - this quaint wine bar really makes you feel like you are in the depths of London's underground network. The entrance to the wine bar is down some steep stairs and the seating area extends into a cave like area. It was packed when we stopped by for a post theatre glass of wine and this was a monday evening. It does get especially hot under the arches perhaps this is what makes it a good place for a date. The rickety tables and candlelight add to the ambience of this wine bar.
Wine is severved in measures from as small as 12cl, the house red was smooth and delicious. They do serve food, however we did not indulge.
Gordon's is an absolute treasure of an establishment. Unfortunately, it's the worst-kept secret in town, and it seems that every time I've managed to get there recently it's been absolutely jam-packed.
If it's summertime, the small outdoor area is a beautiful place to share some bottles of wine with friends. If you're looking for a cozier time, try to get one of the tables inside that seems to have been only recently dug out of the ground. (Very cave-like, and VERY low ceilings.)
As for the wine menu, it's fantastic. Lots of variety, and good value for money.
This is one of the more unique central London establishments I've been to, and heartily recommend it.
Definately somewhere to go if you want to escape real life and pretend you're in a pub on diagon alley!
Very cosy, intimate and the darkness helps if you don't like your date!
Extremely delicious wines, even the house wines are great.
The food is ideal to help settle your stomach when you order bottle after bottle...
A must try if you haven't already :D
Fist sized scotch eggs! mmm tasty, but they're not the main pull to Gordon's. This Fagin's lair of a wine bar is best enjoyed on a rainy afternoon, holed up away from all the loopy tourists, sipping a glass or ten by candelight. The last time I was here we made friends with a very cute cat, so bonus points there. Alas for Gordon's though - the secret is out, it's busy as a Japanese beaver most evenings so cosy conspiritorial tables are hard to bag. And yes you WILL bang your head on the ceiling...love it!
