Reviews for Marathon Kebab
the marathon is as famous as camden itself ...old heads and head the balls, everyone who is anyone in the music or art world has used it and loved it for years..keith richards, shane mc'gowan and paul weller are all on record saying some of the best nights of their lives were spent there in the company of danny blue..the marathon is historic ..and signaled the great alliance b'tween the irish and greek/turkish in london .. the dionysian shebeen ..camden council and the cops should be hung for meddling with the rare find that 'the marathon' is..personally, i blame the stage school bunny winehouse and pete pathetic doherty..for bringing in hordes of equally dull stage school and hooray well-off spring brats that stink up camden..they've ruined the place..and now it looks like our only salvation and last chance saloon is under threat..having to close down at one o'clock..and keep the middle class raffle riffs from the door!
Having the Marathon situated in the one block walk between my favourite pub (The Enterprise) and my old house on Belmont Street meant I ended up there almost an embarrassing amount of times over a two and half year period. I've only moved a few blocks away but my wasteline thanks me often. Surprisingly great food for a place open after the rest of Camden Town shuts down, and 5 nights a week you can see the French tinged rockabilly stylings of Danny Blue playing for hours out the back. He himself is one of London's greatest unknown treasures, as is the Marathon for the crowd of late night locals and visitors it houses and entertains every night.
Ever found yourself stumbling down Camden High Street after being turfed out of every pub at closing time but still with the will to party driving you on into the night? Welcome to the Marathon Bar, Camden's hazy crazy last chance saloon! Is it a kebab shop, is it a bar, or is it the final resting place for Camden Town's die hard alcoholics and desperados? Herein you will find all manner of drunken cheerfulness and legendary French rock n roller Daniel strumming his geetar and skwawking his glorious way through Chuck Berry songs. They dance, they sing, they drink, they eat kebabs, they flirt until the wee small hours when it really is the end, unless you catch word of the evening's house party where a trip to the nearest offy in Kentish Town for a bottle of cheap vodka will gain you entrance and the debauchery will continue till god knows when.
I followed a friend over to this fabulous dive after finishing a sweaty gig at the Fiddler's Elbow. It was a Sunday night, and we just wanted to find a place that would serve a beer after midnight. The place was packed with characters of every odd stripe. It was a noisy, roiling, vibrant hot spot. It wasn't jazz that night: a fellow resembling a zombie played boogie woogie Elvis tunes on a Gretsch turned up very loud. I had a cold beer, hot fries, and a lump of hash in my pocket. I was so happy I could have died.
OK, now for the final instalment of my strange Friday diary – to start from the beginning go to St Martin's Hotel bar. Suitably, it finished to a completely bizarre place that I hadn't heard of until that night.
Marathon restaurant is the only place, as far as I know, that manages to combine a kebab shop with a live jazz venue at the back. Yes, that's right they sell kebabs and they have a couple of guys playing the sax at the back with about 6 tables around. You can grab a beer and the place is open till very late. It attracts the very best of Camden. At 3am the place was completely packed. All the tables and any floor area were full. More people were coming in as we were leaving at around 3.
The kebabs are excellent. They actually put real chicken in there, which tastes great. Was not that adventurous to go for the doner, but that looked pretty good too.
So, if you find yourself hungry or thirsty and feeling that you have to listen to some jazz too at 3 or 4am on a Friday/Saturday night then this is the place to go. It's an experience.
