Reviews for The Market Porter
LOVE the Market Porter. Always buzzing, great sleection of drinks and a fab atmosphere. It is really busy all the time (not to its detriment) so sometimes it can take a few minutes to get served, but it doesn't detract at all. Highly recommended.
Just a brilliant, brilliant place to go for a drink. It does get extremely busy, both inside and out so not really some where to go for a swift, cheeky Sussex half but if you've got the time (and patience) to wait to get served (not criticism of the service, just reflects how popular it is) then it is well worth it.
The range of beers available is truly impressive, constantly changing, and even the most fervent ale geek will find his (or her) beard bristle with the anticipation of supping a previously unknown brew. And if you're unsure of what to go for the Harvey’s Sussex Best is consistently top drawer.
As mentioned above, it does get absolutely rammed so a degree of tolerance is required, especially on a Saturday, but it really is worth it, honestly.
There is a dining room upstairs, staffed by the most charming waitress I have had the pleasure to have met. The food is pretty damn good. A proper pub menu, generous, well presented and with a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure. (I started with a delicious duck, fig and pistachio terrine on Saturday. Wow. Truly wow.) I highly recommend the burger or fish and chips. Classics done extremely well. I've never had one of their mixed grills, much to my shame, but I am extremely keen to give it a shot!
Everything about the Porter says proper, old school boozer and in my humble opinion, it really can't be beat. One of my greatest pleasures is to wander through the market, maybe picking up something to eat on the way through, a pint of Harvey's Sussex best from the Porter and an hour or so spent outside, chatting in the sun, soaking in the sights, smells, and sounds of the market. London simply doesn't get any better than this.
Often hard to find a place to perch, but that's made up for by an unsurpassed collection of beers - with many rare guest ales on tap. If you like real ales and rare beers this is a must.
It's a particularly fine idea on a sunny early-evening to get a takeaway from the 'posh sausage' stall next door to enjoy a banger and a beer.
I'll continue with my funny Friday diary (first point St Martin's Lane, remember? The end is the best one, wait for it) with the Market Porter.
Pretty nice pub in the Borough Market with quite a lively feel to it. Actually that's an understatement – the place was heaving. Packed inside, and packed outside too. Lot's of people from the creative industries around the Southwark area, plus the usual crowd of professional who were celebrating their Friday liberation before going back in on Monday. Great location to end up after a few hours spent in Borough market, which deserves a review of its own.
Not much more to say on that one. It was time to head back home, as my phone battery had run out so I was socially stranded with nothing to do, nowhere to go and no one to see!
I love this place, mainly because I find it really nostalgic, I think it's because it's close to the Borough Market.
Extremely busy, but great atmosphere, must visit on a Friday night. It servers speciality beers (I haven't tried so please feel free to comment if you have!), street magik, and lots of smashing of glasses, they also serve food.
You'll find that City people drink here weeknights but especially on a Friday, and I would imagine tourist would visit in the day and on weekends.
But don't be put off this pub suits everyone.
