That 'famous cheese room' others are mentioning is totally worth the visit. After tasting various cheeses you can structure your own cheese and meat platter. It's cold and smelly inside, but it all adds to the atmoshpere. On the other side of the bar is another hidden gem, a wine cellar with glass walls where you can also walk in (with a member of staff - I mean don't just wonder in by yourself:) and they let you taste and choose wine adding info about every bottle, region, grape, etc.
Overlooking the river, this place may look just ok from the outside, but inside is where the little treasures are find. If you like cheese and wine, that is.

Went there for first time this Saturday - place was buzzing, good looking crowd (girls were pretty dressed up) and was impressed by the wine list and of course the famous cheese room - staff so friendly and give you insight into background of wines and offer selection of delicious cheeses and hams to compliment, cheese room is definitely unique and was the perfect snack to kick of my night - people were dancing towards the end of the evening to add to the atmopshere and i felt i was in a funky, unpretenious bar in central london rather than Putney - definitely a must - and get involved with the cheese room!

I've lived in Putney for 3 years and there really hasn't been a decent upmarket bar until now. Went to the Star and Garter for the first time in October for a friends birthday in their amazing function room and have been sold on the place ever since.
Love the main bar area, huge wine selection, which goes down well with my girlfried and her pals. Even tried out their cheese room the other week which was different but well worth it.
