Over the years I've been in the area countless times but never knew Champagne Charlies existed (in the arches on Villiers Street). I was invited to a drinks do, and very good it was too (if rather a little chilly, which I'm finding a lot recently at pubs and restaurants, looking at the empty cold fireplaces longingly...).

CC is one of those great meandering cellar wine bars/resaurants that does what it says on the tin. It also has a feeling of being the place for assignations/illicit meetings, but whether or not that has anything to do with the sawdust on the floor I don't know.

Good range of wines of varying prices.

This is a great little wine bar right next to Embankment tube, with sawdust on the floor and drinking alcoves. It's part of the Davy's chain, but still feels authentic and individual.
They also have a good selection of beers, in addition to the wine, which can be served in pewter tankards, great for making the boys feel special!
They also have a separate restaurant area, and the food is definitely excellent. The atmosphere contributes to it as well, and it's great place for anything from dates to business/casual get-togethers.

Be warned though, it is only open on weekdays.
