Reviews for The Toucan
I drank at the The Toucan about 8 years ago and I loved it so much. I recently revisited last month to find that it has got even better. Extention as now there is an upstairs bar, the staff are still as friendly and knowledgable on the drinks they serve, lovely tasting Guiness and an amazing selection of Whiskey's! I can't fault the place! I love everything about it from the size to the decor to the drinks that they serve. Only thing is I have never eaten there so I cannot comment on the food but it certainly looked nice.....I was far too busy enjoying the drink! It's a must see place in Soho x
Now, I've never been to Dublin, so I have no idea what a genuine Dublin bar is like. But I have a sneaking feeling they're nothing like the O'Neills at the end of your high street, and a lot more like Toucan. Despite being a fairly new addition to Soho, Toucan already has the atmosphere of a traditional old drinking den, and thanks to bar food that includes oysters and sourdough bread, I hope it will stay for a long time to come. Friendly, inexpensive, and well worth a visit.
I avoid Irish pubs outside of Ireland. They're generally a horrible nightmare that have no relation to the real thing. There's more to it than gathering some rusty old bicycles and typewriters and nailing them to the ceiling.
The Toucan is the real deal and quirky to boot. It's very busy as a rule, but with 4 guinness taps (downstairs alone), a fine selection of irish whiskies (incl. one from my local city that I've never seen outside of it), irish crisps (TAYTO!), toasted sandwiches and oysters (not together), I love it.
I am not a guinness drinker so I can't say how good it is but it's been recommended to me. Added to this the music is generally very pleasant indie and you can sit on a giant pint of guinness while you savour it all.
All visitors to Central london looking for a cool niché little pub should visit the Toucan...practically around the corner from the always interesting Soho it not massive infact there are barely a handful of seats inside.]
The idea here is get your pint of Guiness and stand out on the curb dodging the delivery lorries, Ferrari's, Porche's and odd mental scooter rider.
Prices arent too bad for a drink either, they sell a variety of drinks from behind the bar which is a couple of meters long...I dont know how they get more than 2 people behind it.
Its usually packed with local young and trendy business type and soho-ians.
Its a great pub with a great pint and full of character considering you cant get inside...well worth a visit.
