Four stars as the best thing about the Oak is the upstairs bar - where you can wait for your table or just have a cool drink at pub prices. The restaurant has a great feel (it is a pub so there are no bookings) - there is a wood-burning pizza oven and limited outside seating. The menu is Italian with pizza the speciality - which is a pity as the pizza isn't quite as good as you'd hope and lets down what is otherwise a great all-round package. It's a bit limp - a bit Pizza Express really...

It's a bit limp - a bit Pizza Express really - and when there is excellent local competition it is a pity. However with a pleasant vibe, great olive oil, good wine, and that upstairs bar, it seems almost churlish to fault the slightly anaemic cooking.

The Oak is a fun but sophisticated pizza restaurant. Recently refurbished after a fire, The Oak retains all its charm. The restaurant doesn't take bookings but if you have to wait you can do so in the bar above the restaurant which is subtly lit and has sofas and low tables - this in itself is a great place to go for a few drinks with a partner or friend. Tables are rustic wood and crowded quite close together but somehow that doesn't matter. Pizzas are cooked in an open oven which can be seen from some of the tables. The menu is not extensive but the food is always delicious and the staff friendly and helpful. The Sunday roast is great although rather expensive. In fact the whole munu is quite pricey. There are a few tables outside in the summer for eating or drinking or both, although these are directly on the street.

Recently refurbished. Great venue - especially the top floor coctail bar (though I have heard that the pizzas downstairs are excellent). They are seriously understaffed though, so just hope its your lucky day when you visit.
