Reviews for The Black Lion
The first thing you notice when you get inside the Black Lion is the amazing interior. The Grade II listed gold embossed ceiling, brass hangings and working fireplace combine to give a unique and welcoming interior perfect for a wintry Sunday drink. The food's damn fine too if a little expensive but they're slightly let down by the beer selection, which includes Amstel and Hoegaarden but little else of interest. Locals keep this historic pub quietly buzzing and an electic soundtrack which tends towards Britpop and indie makes this a truly accessible local.
Kilburn, like so many other London areas, is going through the much maligned or lauded gentrification process - depending on which local resident you speak to. The Black Lion is one pub that has benefitted from this. Previously an old irish pub, it has been refurbished but it's character has been retained.
Bright and spacious with gorgeous high ceilings (believe me, they're worth a mention), it's lovely for a few drinks. Decent pub grub - sausages and mash, burgers, that kind of thing. There's an attached dining room, although, the food isn't amazing, it's a good filler of an evening. I've often wished that they would just declare it all a pub and if you want to eat, you can.
There's a guesthouse upstairs which friends and family have stayed at, it used to be better I must admit. The Good Ship across the road tends to be very noisy and it's not as friendly as it used to be, but, it's reasonably priced and well located.
Go for the pub and if you're hungry whilst there, the grub. You won't be disappointed.
The Black Lion is not just simple traditional gastro pub; it is also a guesthouse upstairs.
Situated in Kilburn, The Black Lion is one of my favourite pubs in London. I love their gold decorated ceiling, and mirrors all around one side of the pub.
Again, I was only there for drinks so I didn't ordered food from the kitchen so I can't review that part. Drinks menu includes sparkling and champagne, good repertoire of wine list, draght on tap include: Stella, Kronnie, Fosters, Guinness, John Smith's, Hoegaarden, Strongbow, Adnams Broadside Bombardier. Import bottles include: Budwar, Corona, Peroni, Leffe Blond, Cobra, Belle-Vue Kriek and Magners.
Upstairs is the guesthouse, which has 12 rooms and the current rate in 2006 is £33 per person per night. Which isn't bad, ensuite bathroom and colour digital telly, free wifi, breakfast included.
If I live anywhere more near to Kilburn, this would have became one of my favourite hangouts.
