Reviews for The Ship Tavern
I am from the U.S. - Los Angeles area. Two of my friends and I were in London for a week in May. After touring the Sloan museum, we stumbled upon the Ship Tavern. It became my favorite London pub. I have viisted London many times and been in many pubs, but this is the best. We initially had some pints in the lower floor. The next evening we came back and had dinner upstairs. We happened to be there on "pie night" - two pies for one. The steak and ale pie I had was marvelous! This is a very cozy, friendly, and beautiful pub. And they weren't playing any rock and roll music. Priceless!
If there's Pork Belly on the menu at a restaurant I will order it (Same goes for sticky toffee pudding, but that's a whole other story I'll leave for later date). Of all the numerous places I have had it, this is worth ordering. Excellently prepared and perfectly cooked. This was followed by a great chocolate fondant.
Nice old and dark styled interior, that felt very much like the inards of a ship. The staff were very friendly and I wouldn't hesitate to go back to try their other great looking dishes. Food was well priced. Total bill for two (without alcohol) came to £40.
Last friday we went to the Hunterian museum of gruesome things in jars, and in order to recuperate, stopped in at the Ship to try some of the beers in their ale festival thing, because, appearances notwithstanding, my girlfriend and I are actually 60 year old men with large bellies. It was packed, as it would tend to be late on a Friday, but the staff were great, and the beer was cheap and delicious. I didn't even mind having nowhere to sit because for the first time this year it was nice enough to stand outside, and this we did, watching the commuters take the shortcut to Holborn. It was delightful. No idea about the food, I'll have to go again. She is a fan of breaded camembert - and besides, we didn't see all of the exciting pickled cadavers last time.
ah - just realised. The "not their fault" referred to her later being very sick much later on, following too much white wine in Covent Garden. The famed beer then wine rule doesn't operate when you start with ale and finish on sauvignon blanc. Just a tip for you all.
The Ship, being as it is a pub round the corner from the vast array of Holborn offices, gets a bit busy of an evening. Luckily, it has a rather more rarely-visited upper floor, where one can eat one's lunch in peace.
The restaurant has a certain charm about it - it feels real and solid and old. It doesn't come cheap (£9 - £15 or so for mains), but then little does these days. The pies are pretty impressive - big, deep-dish affairs with a huge puff of pastry resting on top. I wasn't too impressed with my pasta dish last time - there was a lack of depth to the flavour - but it was acceptable.
Happily, the Ship has got in on one of the fashions of food from 2008 - baked camembert. Get one of these to share with a friend over a bottle of wine and you'll be very glad you did.
Really fine place. Proper pint pots with handles and really well kept beer. Great variety in what's on the pumps. You'll hardly ever get a seat but it doesn't detract from the place. If you do get a perch it's even better.
