Reviews for Maharaja
Dissapointed in this place after reading rave reviews. The food is from south india which is not as spicy as i normally eat the reason why i ddint enjoy as much and the service was a bit slow.
This is the best Indian I have been to, I have not been to another Indian since trying this one because I know the food will not be as nice.
The restaurant is very close to the city centre (close to Lime Street Station), however it is in a random street with not so nice places around - but don't let this put you off. The decor is just a traditional curry house, nothing special. But the menu and taste of the food is amazing, delicious, everyone should try it.
It does not have the usual curry names, but everyone we have tried has been good. I love the lental/spinach based curry (can't remember the name), it is nice and light but very more-ish. The chicken nadan curry is good too. They also have an amazing choice of breads - again not the usual nann bread but different types, all worth trying. The 'Dosa' is a massive tube shaped bread - definitely try this.
This is the best indian food I have ever tasted. Apparently Gordon Ramsey eats here. This is not like your typical indian food, they do not have the usual things you would expect to find on the menu, but don't be disappointed, be adventurous. This food will not leave you bloated like most indian meals, here you will manage to eat everything that is placed in-front of you and you will want more. Also you will be pleased to know that you will not have the curry hurry or the curry bum the following morning. For a start their Tray of Pre Meal Snacks is something of an unusual treat, the most bizarre selection of weird Poppadoms you may have ever seen. One down side for me though is their mango chutney is not very nice so ruins my enjoyment of these snacks. Don't hold this against them as their chutney is probably home-made. As for their curry, these are very simple tasty dishes, you can taste every ingredient and there is no toxic looking colouring. Which is handy when taking away, as it does not present you with any bad staining of clothes or table wear, which is always a bonus. One other thing to mention is the fantastic selection of breads they offer, very strange. Try the subtle Appam, which comes in the shape of a bowl, or the Dosa which is like a massive tubular bread extravaganza...unbelievable. Please do not let the grotty, nasty decoration of the restaurant or the rough neighborhood put you off, this place is a must. it is like the mecca of indian cuisine, you have to go their at least once in your lifetime.......but i guarantee you never will as it is impossible to go here only once.
The Maharaja on London Road is without doubt the best Indian restaurant in Liverpool. Once you get over the rather drab location of London Road and the cheap - but not terribly garish - interior, you are in for a treat. Don't go if you always order the same from your Indian take-away and aren't open to try new things, because you won't recognise a single dish on the menu! No Kormas, Tikka Masalas or Vindaloos here.
The Maharaja serves Kerala dishes, from the South West Coast of India. Dishes seem very light and fragrant, and the menu has a great Seafood and Vegetarian selection. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and stopped us from over-ordering a few times when the menu just seemed too tempting!
The set meal at lunchtime is particularly good value, £6 for 3 curry dishes, rice, bread and dessert. However, the dessert are the one thing at Maharaja that aren't outstanding, I'd recommend going for another starter or side dish instead!
I have tried a few different Indian restaurants in my time and have found restaurants like the Maharaja relatively rare. In constrast to the 'standard Indian' (all the same menus, most made in bulk from the same curry base) Maharaja pride themselves on Kerala (southern Indian) cuisine. The majority of meals are made from scratch, mainoly comprising coconut milk, bananas, mangoes , seafood (etc...) - very different from you standard 'curry house'. They make all of their sauces/dips fresh on site, the quality/service is excellent, and the place is CLEAN! Speaking honestly, the prices are slightly higher than other Indian restaurants but you should consider the effort and service in which you get so much more for your money. I would recommend this place to all, but particularly to those who usually go for the standard 'chicken tikka' once in a while in order to gain a wider slice of perspective on southern Indian cuisine.
