Reviews for FACT
FACT stands for Film, Art & Creative Technology and is literally that. Probably the nicest of the Liverpool cinemas, it has a nice creative modern feel, with a little cafe and shop on the ground floor and a bar on the second bar then refreshments for your film as you go in the third floor. As well as showing current cinema films, there are plenty of interesting documentaries and european/foreign exhibitions. The "box" on the bottom floor is a unique screen with sofas, probably great for couples if you want to snuggle. A nice addition to your regular cinema. In summary, FACT has got your basic cinema needs, with a bit more invention, and a bit of a fancy quirk.
FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) on Wood Street combines galleries, cinemas, a cafe, shop and bar. It's a lively and informal place with a great atmosphere.
The gallery exhibitions change every couple of months and are often focused on art that involves media and technology. They are usually fascinating and the gallery staff are always friendly and helpful providing extra information and insights into the work on display.
The cinemas are run by the Picturehouse chain and show a good mixture of mainstream and arthouse films. The three main screens are all situated on the 3rd floor with a small kiosk outside selling soft drinks, popcorn, ice cream etc. You can also take alcoholic drinks purchased from the bar into the cinemas.
The bar is a great place to meet with friends before a film, or during the day for a coffee. There are also regular film quiz nights. There is a good little cafe on the ground floor, which has free Wi-fi access (also available in the bar).
The shop is small but stocks a good range of arts related books postcards etc.
FACT is a fantastic venue which I would recommend to anyone.
FACT is an arts centre housing galleries and cinemas, as well as a café and bar. The galleries show film, video and new media work by internationally known artists. Every two years you can catch Liverpool Biennial and in between exhibitions have included a retrospective of the development of video art through the Video Positive Festival, interative projections which react with users' shadows and work by Pipilotti Rist, one of Europe's leading female artists.
The work can sometimes feel a bit inaccessible to those used to flat paintings on a wall, but the interpretation and enthusiasm of the staff on hand to explain should you need, more than compensates for any confusion you may feel and once you get used to the idea that a moving image can be a painting too, it is easy to see this as art.
To support access to this world of new media art, workshops for schools, families and young people are run alongside the gallery programme and FACT also hosts tenantspin, an internet television channel devoted to discussing issues relevant to the communities of Liverpool whether this be culture, housing or political debates.
Picturehouse at FACT runs the cinemas, screening films from around the world including work from the Spanish Film Festival, the UK Jewish Film Festival and many others.
