Nice decor, very old style and cosy. I feel like I’ve stepped back in time in this pub but in a really nice way! Lots of little snugs and a large bar in the centre of the main room. There are also listed mens toilets (although I've yet to see them being female!) I have to agree with the other review though, its the only place in Liverpool I've been with friends and suffered at the hands of a pickpocket :( Got a phone stolen out of a coat so beware, it seems this is not an isolated incident....

The Phil can be a great place for a drink. Not only has it got the best exterior for a pub ever (it used to be a gin palace, as a friend of mine never tires of telling people), it has cosy little snugs (named for composers), a big, gorgeously decorated main room, and a back bar room, as well as listed men's loos - ask a bloke to show you around ladies (with the permission of the..other...patrons...ahem), it serves decent-ish pints. The prices aren't the cheapest however, and it does depend on who's serving as to how well you get treated.
It can also be a place to see the "eccentrics" of Liverpool in action - Jeremiah, the People's Poet (and imposters) stop in occasionally to liven up an evening.
Sadly, so do the pickpockets - lots and lots of people suffer bag/wallet theft in here, so be wary.
Friday nights/concert night - getting a table is like finding the Holy Grail.

Firstly, the quality of both the cask ale and the lager is of a very high standard... and the prices are reasonable for people who frequent NICE pubs. Secondly, name any pub/bar that hasn't had a bag thief at some point ( the staff at The Phil are very vigilant and eject any suspisious characters very quickly in my experience ( which includes the "peoples poet"- who if you notice doesn't do it JUST for entertainments sake!!!). I've been drinking at The Phil for 7 years and continue to return because of the great standards and customer care
