Reviews for Wig & Mitre
I travel a great deal for work and always look forward to the annual visit to Lincoln as the hotel we stay in is directly opposite this great pub and restaurant.
The menu is always exceptionally tempting, making it hard to choose. On this occasion I would have happily chosen any of the starters. In the end, I plumped for perfectly executed fishcakes with a creamy horseradish and chive sauce. Main courses were similarly tempting - lots of locally sourced meat and game, plus some inventive-sounding fish dishes.
I chose the slow-cooked blade of beef with horseradish mash (I'm keen on horseradish, ok?) and it was divine. The beef was falling apart and wonderfully flavoursome. Perfect comforting fodder for a chilly winter evening. Pudding was a chocolate and orange fondant - the middle was wonderfully melty. The honeycomb ice-cream that I ordered on the side in place of the requisite vanilla was divine and most certainly homemade.
Excellent wine list and good service, this looks like a quaint pub from the outside (and certainly would be great for a cosy drink downstairs), but venture upstairs and the food is well worth a detour.
A LONG time since I've been there, but this was a cracking pub near Lincoln Minster, on the exceptionally aptly named Steep Hill.
