Reviews for Browns
We moved onto Browns from The Queens when they re-vamped. Love the squashy sofas here for a chat and pre-meal drinks...shame the drinks are so expensive though. Seems to be aimed at the middle aged and middle class, (whenever we have been there). So tempting to then wobble over into the restaurant which never seems to be fully booked. The food has always been good though the menu is somewhat limited. (Though as a veggie this is always the case!) Friendly staff and a nice unhurried atmosphere but the decor is looking a little tired now. Time for a re-vamp perhaps?
We went here for someone's birthday in the hope it would be a bit more upmarket that the places we usually frequent. Unfortunately our expectations were cruelly dashed by a mediocre selection of food that was barely hot. Although this place seemed not to be aimed at students but rather at a more discerning clientele, it was very hard to tell from the food either way. The service was pleasant enough but not so friendly as to make up for the food. The cocktails and drinks were lovely, as was the decor. The temperature of the room was a little cold though, which probably didnt help the temperature of the food either.
Recommended for drinks- especially cocktails. You can do better for food a stone's throw from this place- it's surrounded by better restaurants that aren't as expensive.
I was looking for a place to go with my notoriously picky family - I'm a fan of variety and they prefer to stick with the same old same old.
What Browns offers is your basic pub menu, but better made and better tasting. Steak and Guinness pie, burger and chips, plenty of pasta dishes.
There's nothing to satisfy a spice-hound or those with exotic cravings, but that's never been on the cards. One look at the place tells you they're going for 'establishment'.
And the meal? It was great! I was a bit worried when the waiter asked me how I wanted my burger cooked, but the chefs obviously know how to turn out food that's perfectly done. Everyone enjoyed their food. The ambience is ok, tables are well spaced, but you're always aware that you're in a big open room with lots of other diners.
Ok so it's another Browns. But in Leeds this is not just another Brown's. They have actually thought about this one in terms of placement, decor (still Browns-ie) but with an edge and a really nice sense of space and flow between bar area and restaurant. Whoever designed this one did their research.
At the bar the stools offer prime sitting and people viewing positioning. Margurita's here are pretty good too, almost competition for my most favoured of cocktails the mojito!
Overall the ambiance is 'just right'. Of course this all sounds a little mundane, but then this is Leeds, and for Leeds this is rather good. Mundane has become undone and feels cosmopolitan on the Headrow amongst other designer shopping and the nearby cinema. In short this works because of the great combination of location, people and that 'just right' Brown's atmosphere.
So my advice is to go, you'll be impressed at the standard and level of well 'nice-ness'. Of course if you are out to impress then maybe its more fun to play it not so safe!
