Reviews for West Yorkshire Playhouse
Fancy building, some great shows, it's rather good.
It's situated behind the market, beneath the shadow of 'the Kremlin', and is totally modern and clean inside. There's plenty of legroom for us taller folks, and a good view from all seats.
Great building, fully accessible auditoriums and facilities. Good variety of productions on from classics to cutting edge, with more than a nod to local talent past and present.
There are lots of restaurants close by for pre curtain dinner. Refreshments available but a bit pricey.
It's not far from the town centre but there are theatres closer to the student end of town. The variety and quality of productions on here means this probably isn't an issue. Easily reached on the bus or by taxi if you're not up for walking it. Concessions are available for students, families and those on benefits.
A modern theatre for modern people.
WYP puts on shows offering a really diverse appeal. From the stage plays you'd expect to see in a theatre, to showcasing local and unknown writing talents the Playhouse has everything. Even ballet from the Leeds based Northern Ballet Theatre.
There's a decent sized bar to enjoy a drink before the show and an internet cafe to boot.
I first went to a show here in 2002. I'd just moved to Leeds and didn't know anybody. I was expecting stuck-up 'somebodys' but I got normal, ordinary people like you and I. A good bunch of 40-somethings and students. Families and pensioners.
There's no pretencious folk here, everybody is welcome and if you've never been to the theatre, this is a great place to start.
