Reviews for The Cockpit
when i went to the cockpit i didn't really like it because it seemed a little bit dingy and it is full of students. The music they play is ok but again it is focused on the younger generation. The drinks are quite cheap which is the only thing that keeps me coming back to this place! It is usually filled with the regulars as well as students but they keep themselves to there own crowd so i wouldn't say its a good place for making new friends! I don’t think the toilets are cleaned regularly because they are absolutely disgusting!
A damp school hall with a bar and live music. Great for the average student or Filth Fan.
The Cockpit has been a leeds institution for years now, with the closure of several venues like Town & Country and the Duchess it had the gig market sewn up. Then the Universities got in on the act and the bigger bands started playing there instead. Now there's Rio's and the new Academy, what will happen to the Cockpit?
It's an old-school venue under a railway arch with sticky floors and overpriced beers, but the draw was always the music. Even that suffered as the sound mix has been remarkably inconsistent even during the same gig.
I'm off there again in a few weeks, who knows how it will be then?
Well I guess if you go to a club down a filthy tunnel in the centre of Leeds you don't expect the Ritz but I do find the Cockpit disappointingly filthy inside and out.
Spilt beer, busy, fairly rude staff, far, far too much badly EQd NOISE, poor lighting, it's trying really hard to be a credible rock bar but at the end of the day it is just coming over as a fairly dirty student haunt.
Some big bands go here - but increasingly so they are going to the Met up the road, and I know which I would prefer to visit!
I'd generally avoid a place like this unless I was a) already drunk or b) really REALLY wanting to see a particular band - there are nicer rock venues in the city.
Some of the best nights I have had have been in the cockpit. They have loads of different nights on through the the week including a gay night if thats what your into and fancy something a bit different from Leeds normal gay scene. The music they play is predominatly rock and indie ecept Tuesdays which i tend to avoid which is metal music. They also have live music and the gigs are always great and they also have guest dj's playing a great selection of DJ's the rinks prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is always high. I'd definatly recommend it to anyone.
Coming to Leeds for university was great just because of this place! They have a number of different nights through the week with regular guest DJ's such as Sunshine Underground and the Klaxons. The atmosphere is always red hot with three rooms of music normally open.
As well as this I have seen some legendary gigs here full of legendary performances. The place is so small its almost impossible not jump on stage with the band thats playing.
Through the week the drinks are always cheap and its full of awesome people the best rick/indie nights in Leeds are at the cockpit!
If you're out in Leeds and fancy a nightclub you've got a lot of choice.
If you're wearing a shirt and tie, avoid the cockpit. I've seen people turned away for being too smartly dressed.
Inside you'll find a three room nightclub, playing different music in each room and different music each night.
It also doubles as a live music venue, with plenty of up and coming bands gigging here regularly and a bar as well for the rest of the week.
