Reviews for The Original Oak
Since it started getting sunny on a weekend I've been going back to my student roots and spending lazy afternoons in the (massive) Oak beer garden. Very good for people watching, awesome for £2.09 pints of Carlsberg Cold, but it loses a star because last time I went I waited over 2 hours for some nachos.
I had been in the original oak with my friends four or five times and, as a previous reviewer has said, dismissed it as an 'old man' type pub. I went in with my brother in the summer who went straight up some steps as we went in (which I had never seen before!) and it was like entering a different pub! The upstairs is more modern, lighter and more airy than the downstairs. The best, however, was yet to come. We went on a Friday night in August and it was (shockingly) sunny, the upstairs opens out onto a massive beer garden and I mean massive, loads of picnic benches and seating and big umbrellas, easiest the best place for summer drinking in Headingley if not Leeds!
Lively pub situated in the heart of Headingley, within close proximity of all the other lively bars and restaurants the area has to offer.
The pub is a favourate with the large student population of Leeds, providing a place to sit down and chat over a pint, or grabing a reasonably priced meal.
It also caters for the sports fan, providing comprehensive sports coverage throughout the week on its large screen televison. Word of warning this place can get packed, especially during the football or rugby.
One great asset that this place has is its beer garden, especially during the summer.
Without doubt this is one of the nice pubs in Headingley.
In my first year as a student in Leeds The Original Oak quickly became a regular place for us to go. The sports coverage is fantastic and the atmosphere in the place can be electric the rugby world cup been a excellent example.
Also it is in a student area so the drinks and food are well priced. The food is also nice and you'll find yourself heading back for more.
For me though, the beer garden has to be its biggest selling point for its size and of course the summer BBQ's.
Even when there is no sports the place is packed with lots of fun loving people a great place for students to meet new people as well.
This place is old and dirty. It seems like a smelly old pub at first. But then you get led upstairs......this is where the magic happens. Easily one of the best bars in headingly. Huge beers garden, with bar-b-ques during the summer. Fantastic atmosphere, and lots of students. A clear winner for summer drinking.
Situated in the heart of Headingley, the Royal Oak is only a stone throw away from all the liveliest bars in the surrounding area. You may find one or two under age drinkers from time to time. But, its not something that the pub will allow or even tollerate. So report anyone that you are suspicious of and they will be removed discreetly from the place.
A popular pub amongst students and sports fans alike. Decent sized beer garden, makes up for a lack of car park. Plenty of bars to get served, but be warned, this is a busy, popular pub, so there will be queues.
Service is fast and furious at times, not a place to bring your nan on a Friday night.
Food is available here, all reasonably priced and good enough to make you want to come back again.
Plenty of activities going on, a great bar for watching sports events on the plenty of screens dotted around the location.
Beer is cheap and there is plenty of different brands to choose from. Good choices of wines, again all at resonable prices too.
