It's also very cramped at times and I don't like having to stand in a queue to get my food!
Reviews for Hitchcocks
I've tried this several times now and have been disappointed every time. The food is cooked by enthusiasts rather than trained chefs and the quality is very hit and miss.

The bad news first: they only open when they have enough people booked for that night so you can't just walk in off the street. To book, you need to telephone a number that seems to be manned by an answering machine a great deal of the time. This was a problem for me when arranging a family get-together as I needed confirmation that the booking was in place and couldn't get this until the day before the meal. We nearly went somewhere else just so that we had a firm booking.
Second drawback; you can't pay with a credit or debit card.
That said, we were glad we didn't go anywhere else as this buffet-style restaurant was just the thing. A charming, period building just off High Street in the old town of Hull, the atmosphere is lively and relaxed at the same time with a good mix of ages and types.
The price is per head, which is great for hearty eaters: once you've cleared your plate you can go back for second helpings (or even third!). The variety of dishes is impressive and the quality excellent. Friendly service from everyone and they are accommodating of dietary restrictions - one of our party was vegan and was clearly directed to certain dishes and very happy to have dairy-free ice cream for dessert. You can bring your own choice of wine or order from their bar.
It's now the first place we think of for a celebration, and the thrill of being the first to book and so, choosing the Theme for the whole restaurant, gives added novelty to a night out.
Hitchcocks is not the most beautiful or stylish restaurants in the world or even in Hull, but it is certainly one of the friendliest. Its atmosphere changes with the customer-nominated menu, but the essential constants are as follows:
- Excellent value
- Good food
- Friendly service
- Unswerving vegetarianism
- A willingness to attempt any kind of food, no matter how ludicrous or superficially unappealing
The restaurant is all you can eat, and, happily, this generosity extends to the puddings, which, equally happily, are drawn from a stock list of cakes and ice creams, and are not as heavily influenced by the particular style of the evening as the other courses; much though I wish to sample new dishes, pudding should be and is sacrosanct.
Hitchcocks is well worth a visit for anyone in or around Hull, even without any dead animals on offer.
lovely place, nice atmosphere, good vegetarian food, you have to bring your own booze though, but this isn't a bad thing! possible to choose theme of food
I love this place - its so snazzy and one of Hull's undiscovered gems! The restaurant is quite gothic, I think, in its style, but this adds one 100% to the atmosphere, from the old bottles with candle wax dropping down the sides, to the wonky window-sills, the place is ace! The food is absolutely out of this world and although I am a raging carnivore, you never notice the fact that meat is not on the menu. The dessert menu is to die for, and last time I went, I was charged a £1 cork fee - what a bargain! The whole place is just my ideal night out so I would whole-heartedly recommend it. Get yourself there on a night out and eat some fantastice home made food!
A fantastic Veggie restaurant that you find out through word of mouth. Each night has a theme (eg Italian, Indian, Mexican) that is determined by the first person to book for that night (booking is essential). Well worth a visit.
Even my non-veggie husband loved it.
