Lovely little local boozer, disappointing food

I didn't expect to find this place on Trusted Places...its in the depths of West Wales!

This is a quaint little two-room pub with a cosy atmosphere provided by its open fire and sofas, and there's plenty of newspapers and listings mags to read. Its very much a locals' local but I don't think they object when the odd tourist stops by - they're all pretty friendly in there.

There's a reasonable selection of ales and lagers, and they do food which you can eat in the bar or in a small attached dining room. My parents had been raving about this place to us for ages - the chips were of the real-potato-hand-peeled-and-cut-that-day variety and cooked so well that they were going for a weekly fix!

I couldn't wait to try it - however, when we came along something had clearly gone wrong in the kitchen. Everything looked and tasted like it was from the frozen food section of Macro. Even Wetherspoons do a better scampi and chips and for less money. My poor parents were mortifed that they'd brought us here after saying how good it had been.

They gave it a couple more chances in the weeks following but nothing had changed and they've stopped going now. Its a real pity as it had been building up a good reputation for food and it was bringing trade to an otherwise really rather nice little pub.

Whoever sampled the food must have a very limited imagination of what 'pub food' is about. Why didn't they try some of the 'home cooked' choices or the meat dishes which are second to none. OK.. they don't have very fancy sauces - but good quality food doesn't need to be covered up. These products are all locally produced and of the highest quality taste.. If you expect 'scampi and chips'(how banal) to be of the fresh variety, surely the price must have given it away.
I suggest that, in future, you ask the proprietors for advice when choosing...........!!

Have Wetherspoons ever hear of FRESH food or LOCAL produce ? Probably not - it takes s
    some getting used to !!!!!!!!!

2643/Lorna/D must work at this pub or own shares in it judging by those little outbursts. Two in one hour! If 2643/Lorna/D does work for this place then I must say this is a most unprofessional response.

She may say "scampi and chips (how banal!)" but it was on the menu in the first place, the only other options were lasagne and chips, burger and chips, fish and chips, chicken in white sauce and chips, something else and chips...try not choosing a 'banal' option from that little lot!

There were no 'home-cooked' choices or meat dishes. Unless you consider 'home-cooked' to be heated up in the oven or bunged in the deep-fat fryer.

If she'd like to re-read what I said then she'd notice I said that that something must have gone wrong in the kitchen. I had in mind something like the chef had walked out, or they'd been let down from the suppliers. And please note I visited in August 2006 and this feedback comment has been made over a year later.

Because I do not live there these days, it does not mean that I am unaware of the fantastic food markets in Pembrokeshire and the great local produce. I've tried it often enough thanks. I'd be delighted to think this place were making the most of local fare. But trust me, on that occasion and for the few visits which my parents made afterwards the food had been locally-sourced from the likes of Lidl in Haverfordwest.

Bearing in mind it is over a year since my visit it is quite possible that there is a new chef and it has improved. If so, then please say so. Don't just slag off my review. Be positive! I'd be happy to give it another go as I am sure my family would.

It would be an excellent thing to have good quality food once again in what is a very nice pub - something that area is crying out for.
