Reviews for WEST Brewery, Bar & Restaurant
I can't really expand much on oogywawa's review of West, all of which I agree with, other than to say the food is indeed very good, and largely of the German bratwurst/sauerkraut variety. The chips are nice too.
They sometimes have live music, and I was there to listen to The Brass Monkeys, a 19 piece big band in which a friend plays. Well worth a trip to hear them, and well worth a trip to enjoy this bar.
im going to give this 5 stars due to the fact the beer here is outstanding.
i have tried all of the house brews and can happily say they all impress (well nearly all, the dunkel was too much like coffee for me)
the staff are polite and friendly and the beer can come in glasses of up to two pints!!!!
and by god is it potent.
2/3 of these and you're head will feel lighter than air.
my only problem was the food - it was okay, but not worth the price for them. (about £8 for a burger and chips which although the chips were good, the burger wasnt great).
there is also a fantasticly sized beer garden outside which makes for a great summer atmosphere. and also at only 10minutes walk from argyle street, west is the perfect place to start a night out
It's heartening that although 52 pubs a week are closing at the moment, sales of beer from small regional craft breweries are up by 10%.
"West" exemplifies all that is good about pubs and quality beer, in this case Lager brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot of 1516 - in laymans language it means that only Malt, Hops and Water are used in production with none of the detritus that goes into mass produced national brands or should that be blands !!
West in housed in the iconic Templeton Building in Glasgow Green - a wonderful Victorian building modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice. The bar is set out in an airy manner with long tables to encourage community drinking and there is a huge bar to accomodate the thirsty masses.
Although they have a good Wine & Spirits selection, the main draw is the beer and there are 8 in the stable to choose from. There's something to suit all tastes from the light and fragant Summer Bock, to the darker fruity Hefe Dunkel.
I didn't try the food, which has received excellent reviews in the press, but beware - they only serve until 8.30pm, not 11pm as the website indicates.
Long may places like West continue to thrive...
