Situated on the ground floor of the JJ Burnet designed former Kelvinside Railway Station built in 1896 (this bit was the ticketing hall apparently) Stazione is only half of what's on offer here next to the entrance to Glasgow's Gartnavel Hospital. Above it is the posher Lux Restaurant, owned by the same people, but I haven't eaten there and frankly can't see why I'd need to when delicious food at reasonable prices is available in the downstairs bit.

There are tables outside, and in this unseasonably warm weather (at the time of writing) one of them would have been marvellous, but we called at no notice whatsoever so could only get a table inside.

With a leaning towards Mediterranean food, a fairly wide selection of Tapas and Mezze starters was on offer, and the warm Chorizo sausage and mixed bean compote was the (good) choice for both of us, followed by braised lamb shank on rosemary mash with redcurrant flavour jus, and pan fried sirloin steak with au poivre sauce respectively...

Add to these some of the house special Stazione potatoes (which had been rightly recommended to me), ice cream with fruit puree, liqueur coffees and port, not to mention a litre of perfectly nice Italian house red and two g&t's, and 75 for the lot, while not exactly cheap, was very good value for money.

Portions were about right, bordering on the too big. Next time I'll order the lamb, which was delicious if the small mouthful I was allowed to pinch is anything to go by! The steak was a little too fatty for my taste, but very nice nonetheless.

    Verdict: Go there.

ps as ever the Google Maps pin isn't where the premises are. If you're looking for it, it's at the traffic lights at the entrance to Gartnavel Hospital on Great Western Road.
