We used Tesco Metro in Exeter as our main place to shop for years. It is quite small and does not have a vast selection of stock. However, we always found that it had everything we needed. The selection might not have been as vast as a very large supermarkets but the shelves were always well stocked and so if they stocked it, you would find it.

The staff are in the main very helpful and well informed. They are willing to have a chat as they are sorting your shopping. I like this as in some supermarkets these days the staff are very vacant.

The prices are probably slightly more than the bigger supermarkets, as is inline with mini supermarkets in towns, but we never found it to be expensive.

But it is in a great location, right in the centre of town and is perfect if you want to grab a drink and a snack if you are in town. Good choice of magazines if you want to waste 5mins 'browsing'. Perhaps even some shopping to last you a few meals if you missed something when you took the car, or perhaps you main shop if you have many rucksacks and strong arms. Alternatively just have lots of children, or bring all your relatives. Also stocks flowers for that emergency bunch of forgiveness!
