Reviews for Maxie's Bistro

my family came over from Dublin as a surprise 50th birthday for myself and me twin sis. what a bril time we had. the food here was lovely, the lamb chops were yummy :) my husband went Scottish and had haggis for the first time, which i say he will def be having again. the staff were very friendly. maxies is such a cozy and romantic restaurant which i would highly recomend.

Food, Wine and service FANTASTIC!!! We will be back....

well what can i say, got taken to edinburgh as what i thought was a suprise graduation gift but ended up one of the happiest times of my life, we stumbled upon maxies to get out of the rain, just popping in for a drink it was so lovely we booked a table for dinner, the staff were so friendly and the food was perfect we decided to book a table for next again lunch( also i wanted to eat most things off the daily special board,) ever meal the sat around us i wanted to try, the smell was so lovely. that lunch i ordered to poached oysters with salmonto start then the highly recomended lamb chops, the flavours went so well together, then my other half had a lovely waiter bring over my favourit rose moet, with an engagement ring in the bottom of the glass. what a perfect place to get engaged, the moet the wonderful food, romantic music and candle lit tables. i could not have wished for a better day. thank you to the chefs and waiters in maxies they made one of the happiest days of my life, even more special. we will be back as bringing the family up in september for an engagement party in maxies, cant wait, x x

Where to start? Well, no doubt, from the outside the place looks delightful - really, really lovely. Just do yourself a favour and don't go in it! It's hard to put in to words or really know where to start, it really is that bad. The service was at best lazy - just staffed by kids basically who aren't interested...but then again if I worked for the guy that runs the place I don't think I'd be trying my best! Anyway, the menu arrives and the first clue should be how everything follows a pattern - chicken and sauce or pasta and sauce - there is maybe one thing on the menu that doesn't fit that bill! To be fair, the starter menu didn't look too bad and we ordered a bowl of mussels mariniere to share...they arrived undercooked (as in some of them still cold and sloppy - nice!) and a sauce that was just completely not mariniere - more like blue cheese and not much else! We'd also duly ordered chicken and 'sauce'...took a while and as we sat, we got nervous while literally every table around us (all tourists BTW) got their food and either sent it back or whispered among themselves how bad it was. So ours arrived...and despite having ordered different meals it was exactly the same - anaemic steamed chicken, steamed potatoes and steamed veg - the only difference between the two plates of bland – and the chicken really took bland to a new level – was the varying shades of vile salty sloppy goo over them. I don't feel it would honest to call it a sauce – one was supposed to be smoked salmon related, the other red pepper or something – either way both were just sloppy and salty. The veg was quite something too - a variety (and quite bizarre variety too - broccoli, peppers, courgette, carrot, cauliflower, mange tout all on the same plate – again, nice!) of steamed soggy rubbish, the like of which I've not seen since I was at school. We could only assume the chef actually didn't like food! But it was when we tried to complain that it got really bad. The waiter took our complaint - that it was terrible hence we'd sent full plates back to the kitchen - but the owner refused to come to our table and talk to us about it. Apparently we had to go to him if we wanted to discuss if - clearly he didn't get a place at customer service school! Oh and just one of us had to go and talk to him, not the both of us. Anyway, one of us went over to speak to him and he was just really aggressive - wasn't remotely interested in what was wrong with our meal or why we weren't happy, apparently "everyone else who orders what we had loves it" etc... (not sure about all the other people sending stuff back!). Anyway, do yourself a favour and avoid like the plague! Food in Edinburgh is generally really really good so it's a real shame that somewhere this bad is running. To be honest we felt quite ashamed that tourists would come to this restaurant (it has an entrance right on the Royal Mile) and with that as their experience of Scottish/British food, they'd think all the outdated rumours about how bad our food is are true. A huge shame that somewhere that could be so lovely and in such nice a spot is run by someone who clearly hates customers and food – not necessarily in that order.

We live in the outskirts of edinburgh & were introduced to this wee gem of a place by friends who were here for valentines day. When we arrived we were warmley greeted by the waitress & were asked if we would like to sit in the bar aera or the restruaunt. we chose the bar, it looked all cosy with pillows & candles.we were given the choice to look at the menu or order from the chef's special menu.I had the chicken layered with Haggis in a whiskey sauce with fresh market vegetables, whilst my better half had the breast of phesant stuffed with black pudding & apricot stuffing ina rich port sauce. To wash it down with we had a bottle of shiraz. we will be booking again with the people that recomended us. thank you for a lovley night out

I can't believe it a restaurant that believes the customer comes first, great specials board fantastic selection of wines. First time visit and made to feel like a regular

Having read some of the other reviews about Maxie's Bistro i just had to write a true review. Firstly it is a very welcoming bistro. The staff are are always smiling and attentive. Not quite what some other people say, although everyone has their own opinion!

Then there is the deco, cosy, relaxing and well, what more do you need to enjoy your food, except the wine list which caters for every taste bud.

Now the food!!!

One word *EXCELLENT*

Anyone who has a taste for the finer things in life should go to Maxies and experience what i did. Pure bliss and that was the dessert list!!!

What warm welcome, lovely oldie world feel, great food, cater's for all tastes, very fair prices. First time visit. Will definately return.

"I very much disagree with the previous comments, I was lucky to be seated on the terrace on a beautiful Edinburgh evening during the festival 2007 (August). I had the ribeye steak and my wife ate the chicken with haggis, both meals were to die for and I could not fault the service at all even though the staff appeared to be in great demand to seat other festival goers looking for a table.

I will certainly visit Maxies again and would not hesitate in recomending the restaurant to friends and family."

I have to say this was one of the worst resturants I have ever eaten in. Despite its location and promising menu the service was non existent. we were served two courses over 3 hours. The quality of the cooking was basic at best. The literature mentions Normans own unique sauce recipes. As I said to the manager I only hope Macdonalds dont find out as clearly that was the sauce dear old Norman used.

Complete and utter crap.
