Reviews for Wing Sing Inn
I've been here four times now and taken various friends from work, and they have all been back too! Wing Sing food is simply delicious, classy and superb value for money. The joy is trying new things, being surprised at unexpected combinations or flavours. The fact that there's very few familiar Cantonese style dishes on offer makes eating here much more interesting that most places. The staff are very helpful and suggest dishes, will let you order half portions of thing to try and love their food too. The fact that this place is often busy with chinese families has to be a serious vote of confidence. IF this restaurant were in London I am sure it would be feted, but perhaps we're lucky that you can usually get a table and the prices are very reasonable. Try the home-made rice noodles with pork in garlic sauce, the duck, the dumplings and some of the interesting veggie dishes. Wing Sing gets fresh fish in every day from a fisherman so ask for specials. We had scallops last time, delicious! The spicy clams were also great. Kung Pow chicken is a classic too that they do very well, and the roast duck is crispy and packed with flavour. They don't have a license yet so if you need to drink, there's a decent corner shop a few doors away.
this was out of this world, more a cafe/restaurant, need to bring own beer, but food to die for.
will be back next time in edinburgh.
and cheap too ;o)
This is a proper Chinese diner with genuine northern Chinese food that's not tamed for meek Western palates (according to Dr Liang my doc from Beijing). The place was packed at 7pm mainly with Asian people (a good sign). I had Szechuan style fried chicken that was very tasty and laced with chillies, ginger and tangy szechuan pepper as you'd expect. Everything on the menu looked good so it was hard to choose: thankfully none of your usual Cantonese fayre. I will be back to try different things. This is the only chinese in Edinburgh I've found that serves food worth eating. Prices are very keen too! Sshh! Don't tell everyone...
Tried this out of curiosity and so glad we did! Just the best Chinese we've had yet! A wide variety of dishes, mostly unfamiliar but superb!
The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to assist with the menu.
I'd recommend going with a few people so you can try different dishes.
A "must try" in Edinburgh, and did I mention it's also byob!
Can't wait to go back with lot's of friends.
Having been invited to join some friends at Wing Sing Inn, i have to admit i wasn't quite prepared for the experince i was about to have. It started innocently enough, it wasn't too busy (it was quite early) and we were seated quickly. Then the menu's came. I don't really know what i expected, probably the standard chinese menu - but this is most definately not that! I really didn't know what to have, so my friends who have been here a few times ordered for me. I actually have no idea what i had during the meal, but it was absolutely delicious. Some of it tasted like chicken, but based on the menu, i expect it wasn't! Prices are pretty good too, you really do get a lot!
Wing Sing Inn comes with a health warning, be prepared for an authentic, rough and ready gastonomic adventure into Northern Chinese cuisine. This is rough around the edges and not a smooth experience for people who want a sanitised or normal Chinese meal - go elsewhere. Indeed, one local couple who were sharing our table did indeed leave after not finding their usuals on the menu and were horrified at the assortment of chickens feet, beef stomach, frogs legs and pigeon (English) that littered the mostly Chinese menu.
A friend who lives in the area highly recommended Wing Sing Inn though and I was itching to try it: at last a really different Chinese meal based on Northern cuisine and not the standard Cantonese fare.
The meal started amusingly. The restaurant was packed (they recommend bookings) with Chinese people speaking Chinese. Initially we were sat down on a big round table sharing with others but when a bigger group came in and there was a spare smaller table we were, very politely, asked if we minded moving - depsite the fact that we were half way through our soups. Fine by me, just long as the nosh makes the amusement worthwhile.
The menu is very varied and the English is so bad that the best bet is to decifer from the friendly staff what exactly they are talking about. However, the main excitement lies in waiting to see what pitches up.
I started with a tasty spicy cabbage and noodle soup, which was not bad. However the main courses were excellent: spicy aubergines in strong garlic/ ginger sauce, a green vegetable called swamp greens and sea bass brewed in chlli oil/ unidentified herbs that made my mouth tingle in a way I have never experienced before. Great fun. Was irritated not to be able to try out the spicy prawn tails that I wanted and spied on a neighbouring table but I am already looking forward to my return visit...I might also venture a little more off-piste and try some of the more adventurous stuff too.
