The Malt Shovel
11-15 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1BP
Reviews for The Malt Shovel
This is a particular favourite of local council workers and anyone wanting a quick pint before heading for a train at nearby Waverley Station. As such, the clientele is a delightful mix of locals, tourists and commuters.
Regular food fare is offered at reasonable prices - if you like your plates full and with a good range of options for lunch available, then this is a great bar to visit.
Given the close location to the railway station, it can get very busy on friday nights as workers have a quick one before heading home, so if you're planning a few drinks on a Friday night, get there before 4 pm if possible and get a seat!
There are plenty of other bars nearby, but not all have the timeless charm of this almost traditional Edinburgh boozer.
I love the Malt Shovel pub on Cockburn Street in Edinburgh - but for the fact its so expensive!
Everything else is great - its always busy, but not packed, and has a great vibe with a mixed clientele.
The atmosphere is friendly and warm and the pub decor itself is equally friendly and warm - it is a good, old fashioned traditional pub.
However you pay for this at the till - having visited many pubs in Edinburgh over the years I struggle to think of one more expensive than the Malt Shovel - only the trendy bars on George Street would beat it in the price stakes!
I love the place so much I frequently swallow my pride and pay the prices however - it truly is a gem of a pub.
